Phono Boards

Posted by: Ed R on 26 May 2002

I wonder if I could trouble the erstwhile members of this forum for some advice.

I am looking to upgrade from a 92/90 to a 72/140 and wondered if the phono boards for the 72 are better quality than those for the 92. I am only running MM boards so they're my primary concern but it would be useful to know if the quality is roughly the same across all types including the MC versions.

Thanks in anticipation.
Ed.

Thanks for your view Hakan.

I ought to have said in the initial post that I had borrowed a 72/140 to try at home and thought that although it was better, I wasn't convinced that it was enough of a step up. That's not to be derogatory about it, just that if I subsequently started to try and convince my wife I really need a 102/180 fof further improvement, I may not be too popular.

The original question was posed because I could only use the combination with CD as the 72 had MC boards fitted (I have a MM cartridge). I tried vinyl through the 92 and into the 140 and was trying to imagine how much better the music would be through the 72.

Ed.

Having used the 72 with both a 140 and a 180, with and without a Hi-Cap, I'd get a 72/180. In time you could get a Hi-Cap as an upgrade and it leaves the pre-amp upgrade route very open. I found less of a difference when adding the Hi-Cap to the 180 than I did with the 140. There wasn't much in it, but it seemed as though the pre-amp power supply on the 180 was better than that of the 140. I liked both power amps and now have a 250. I still use my 72 and wouldn't change to a 102. An 82 or 52 gives more of the balance of sound that I enjoy.
