Hmmmm .... I'll get in trouble for having negative views, but a certain drummer comes to mind.

There is whole raft of stuff I don't understand either ... I mean choreography what's that all about, why can't people just stand there and play or sing - do we need the cast of a thousand dancers.

Madonna!

Think about it. She can't sing very well, she can't write songs very well, she's a rather bad actress. She doesn't even look particulary good.

You forgot she has just written and directed a film that is supposed to be dire.

You hadn't noticed that music has gone together with dance for thousands of years, ROTF? And if multimedia's such a bad thing then that rules out as worthwhile all the music written specifically for opera and ballet, which would lose you a huge amount of very good music.

Pete.

A bit of a negative thread, but seconded on U2.

There are bands I dislike far more than U2, but I just don't get all the adoration for them.

Hi Pete

I understand your point - I like opera and some musicals, but not keen on ballet at all (like the music though). It is mainly pop performers who I can't fathom - the ones who have a cordless microphone and prance around on the stage - you don't see Scott Walker doing that to The Drift.

No matter, I'm just too old to dance and too young to die.

The only dances I know how to do are the ones from my youth like Sir Roger de Coverly - now that's real dancing Smile please click here

BTW what's a discothèque?

There is a paperback book out at the moment called "Faking It: The Quest For Authenticity In Popular Music". Let's just say I won't be posting anything negative about anybody on this thread. It absolutely skewers the concept of cultural and personal authenticity in music and asks a serious question about what our tastes would be if such a silly and ill advised concept were removed from our thinking. Food for thought.

Coldplay, Radiohead, just tedious beyond belief.
Don't agree on Madonna though - perfect radio music. It's bouncy, fun,it's got a good bassline, sits in the background and is inoffensive. Just sounds crap if yop try and listen to it

Oasis.
Good pub rock, but thats as far as it goes.
It will be difficult to differentiate between acts you dislike, & bands you admit are good, but just don't like.
eg I think Queen & Pink Floyd are good acts, but don't like them.
Its a bit too easy to list loads of Boy bands, Girl bands, X-Factor clones, etc.

Paul McCartney

I've nothing against the Beatles, but if there was ever an example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts they are it (except J.L.)!

If I was in charge of the UN McCartney would be charged with crimes against humanity for inflicting Linda on the music-loving world.

I can see where 555 is coming from, but it's difficult to make that judgement if, like me, you grew up with the Beatles, and have recently seen Macca in concert (2004).

My additions to this list were to have been Coldplay and Radiohead, but someone beat me to it. I know these bands are like the 21st C equivalent of Yes, Caravan and Genesis, but sorry... zzzz...

With reference to 555 & ruperts posts,
Its been said before, but if its not too rude, I think that the Beatles are dying in the wrong order.
Mind you, to be fair, some of J.L's solo output was a bit iffy.

Another vote for Presley.
He may have been ground breaking in his early career,(maybe not, I don't know), but his Vegas years were musically a vacuum.
Oh, that reminds me............................
Tom Jones!!!

Had a similar conversation in the pub the other day. There could have been no Foo Fighers if not for Kurt Cobain. I would much rather have them than Nirvana.

As for overated people, I don't really get Mark Ronson. How can anyone do so well from rubbish cover versions?
