Sorry but nothing like.
And what Rotf says about Caravan IMO is true.
I think they should go on the most Under rated thread if we had one.
Munch
I think my idea was that the bands I mentioned had the same sort of appeal now that the prog bands did then - just that I think they (i.e. Radiohead and Coldplay) are overrated. Not Caravan. Capisce?
On the subject of Caravanesque groups, ROTF has probably mentioned them but Cressida were pretty great for a very obscure band of that era. Made 2 albums in 70/71 which are now avaiable on a twofer CD.

Normally wouldn't contribute to a thread like this as I believe each to their own etc.
God has a place for everything, rats, bluebottles, boy-bands, The Beatles even R&B.
...but where do R.E.M fit in?

An excellent band IMHO.

I have & I didn't, but that's because pompous hippy music isn't for me.

understood 555, but it definitely is my cup of Horlicks, I love pompous and if it pretentious for the sake of it then I'm hooked - now where's my copy of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

....Oh dear I see Diccus is going off on one again re the Pinks .......IMHO .... Piper .. Meddle ... Relics .. DSOTM ...and Animals are fine (especially DSOTM ) ..But .... The Wall is PANTS and I mean sequin studded 22" flared bright burgundy PANTS! ..truly Water's penchant for smugly berating the apparent distance between the audience and the band knew no bounds on The Wall ...tis funny I admit that I love DSTOM yet simply have never liked The Wall ....any other Floyd lovers (and I'm not a true fanatic) agree?

I've tried several parts of albums from Miles Davis and can't see the attraction or why he gets so much praise, screeching noise is what I hear.

Dear Howard,
Though I love a bit of serious music, and even listen to the Fugues and Cannons of JS Bach's Art of Fugue for enjoyment, I have never found pleasure for myself in Miles Davis' works. On the other hand I am quite ready to concede that this is my problem! I don't doubt the greatness of his ideas, just as many might not exactly find the AOF all that attractive without doubting the significance of the work. I can see that as well. It has taken twenty years of knowing it for me to really begin to undertand enough of it to allow for over an hour's concetrated listening. I find it spell-binding now.
It is a bit like learning a foreign language. Once you get past a certain number of words, understood, then the rest suddenly starts to fall into place, and you get fluent!
Good luck with bashing away at Davis for twenty years!
George

The Jam. A mediocre pop group using non-existent tunes and flat vocals to give us all lectures on socialism.
Van Morrison. At the risk of incurring a musical Fatwa I'll say I find his voice mediocre at best, and his vocal style incredibly irritating.

Reminds me of my first encounter with Miles... having read up I thought Bitches Brew would be the thing for me. After listening to 4 sides of random whirring noises I wondered what it was all about, and after a few tries at it gave it away, filed Miles under "don't bother".
Cut forwards a couple of years and I'm browsing in a record shop and there is this fantastic thing playing so I ask what it is, and it's Kind of Blue, which i buy and playing the whole thing at home am in love with it from start to finish. Further investigation of the catalogue revealed quite a bit of stuff I liked, though nothing as up there as KoB, and I still avoided BB and those of its ilk.
Cut forwards several more years, and I take a friend's record collection to look after while he is overseas for a year. BB is there, I decide to give it try, and... immediately hook straight in to the fantastic groove, and wonder how on earth I missed it the first time. It's a monster (in a good way), but i can see how you might not get into it at all: took me over a decade!
Pete.

jet,
i can honestly say i know where you are coming from with the wall...i personally LOVE the floyds work including the wall but even i must admit to some of walters solo stuff -being...shall we say not as good as the floyd music. the final cut was in my opinion tedious.
my personal favourites are animals and meddle.
just my 2p worth !

Miles can do not wrong in my book but if you had a look at my collection you'd understand why. He just plays music straight from his soul you cannot get purer than that.

Queen, Elton John, George Michael,Coldplay, Radiohead,Celine Dion,ELP, ELO,Will Young,post Beatles McCartney....That's just for starters.

I agree, with the exception of a few marvellously crafted songs ((post Beatles), the overly cheerful.............. Paul McCartney goes into..............
