New Vinyl

Posted by: shoot6x7 on 21 May 2009

I was in our local Sunrise records last night and saw a small section dedicated to vinyl.

There were plenty of 180gram pressings, some Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bowie, ACDC, Metallica, Slipknot, etc...

So the question is, are these modern pressings made from less than high quality digitized sources ?

Should we be avoiding the new pressings ? And digging out twenty year old pressings instead ?

Expensive - undoubtedly. And too expensive - probably. But... Have a read of the archive section on Classic Record's website. It explains how they make a new LP from the old (analogue) masters. Self-serving maybe, but interesting and I think their product is top notch - and they are not alone in that among the vinyl reissuers. Re 180gm, there might be some fanciful arguments about inertia and so on but my guess is that the mass makes the disc less likely to warp.
