Excellent news this.

Good news indeed. But consider that he was rescued from amongst the people he went to support by the people whose presence he went to protest about.

I'm sure that there's an irony in there somewhere.

The fact is he was over there in a war zone preaching the bloody bible.

Its of course great he has come out of it alive, but what a fool.

Rescued you say?

Saved from a dangerous or distressing situation - perhaps. We are not out there so it is so difficult to get the right perspective.

Strangely I was always uncomfortable and not a little sceptical about his disappearance. I genuinely anticipated that he would eventually re-appear alive and well.

Why would "they" (whoever "they" are) target a peace campaigner for kidnapping, let alone harm him?

If they had kidnapped him wrongly they would be bound to let him go unharmed - although perhaps they would have made a big deal of the release in those circumstances?

OK there is no concrete evidence that the whole thing was a complete scam but the opposite is equally true at the moment.

I hope the cynic in me is wrong.

Chris

You are being a cynic.....I guess the family of the American, Tom Fox, who was in the original group of four kidnapped at the same time would have considered the whole thing a scam as well as they buried him.

Yes, Kember was naive (at best) in going there but to suggest it was a scam is ill advised.

I think you're wrong Chris. It wasn't a stunt. And sadly a teacher from Fife is on her way out there to try to achieve the nothing that Kember and his party achieved. She's saying that she doesn't want to be rescued if the worst comes to the worst while being fully aware that troops are sure to be sent in if it happens. What should we do with fools like this?

Either:

(1) Remove their passports.

(2) Shoot them BEFORE they leave the country.

I prefer the second option. A bunch of utter tossers.

Well said, Graham.

Pointless, interfering do-gooders who obviously have no happy life of their own.

Are they really so disillusioned as to think they can change things?

The Government should make it policy that any civilian who goes to a country that is known to be dangerous, whether for altruistic reasons or for inflated remuneration, will not make any efforts to rescue them if they are kidnapped.

They can take the risk if they want to, but should not expect anyone else to put themselves in harm's way as a result.

Well one has to wonder what if anything would have happened if the press hadn't latched onto it like a limpet?

Christ almighty guys just listen to yourselves...

Graham "(2) Shoot them BEFORE they leave the country."Nice one, puts you on the same level as the many dictatorships and repressive regimes around the world. Democracy and individual freedom is a cornerstone of the free world and you destroy it with one thoughtless sentence.
Nigel "The Government should make it policy that any civilian who goes to a country that is known to be dangerous, whether for altruistic reasons or for inflated remuneration, will not make any efforts to rescue them if they are kidnapped."How many countries in the world do you class as dangerous? Iraq? Iran? Papua New Guinea? Bali? Azerbaijan? Colombia? India? How many more on your list? I guess there won't be much travel allowed in your wee world then? This URL=http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1095423800990]link[/URL] may be of intrest to you. By the way, what is inflated renumeration? I guess the guys on the North Sea platforms, working in Nigeria or even India wall fall into that category as well then if you follow the Foreign and Commonwealth office advice?
Ianmacd "Pointless, interfering do-gooders who obviously have no happy life of their own."Interesting conclsuion to jump to.....how did you arrive this leap of logic?

I'm not supporting Kember here but the outpouring righteous indignation and contempt for a guy following his deeply held beliefs (ill advised or not) makes many of you look like narrow minded bigots.

I hope that you don't think that I was remotely serious in advocating shooting Kember and his ilk. But he does deserve to be placed under some sort of restraint just to save him from himself. I don't doubt that he has deeply held beliefs, but he's a f***ing danger to himself and shouldn't be allowed out alone.

Graham

No, I didn't think you were serious and I'm glad to hear that you are not a right wing fascist bastard after all! Smile

I guess I'm just sensitive to this topic since I have a brother who is in Iraq so it struck a nerve I guess.

I guess I shouldn't react to posts at 7.30am in the morning! Listening to music now so it's all cool.

Cheers

Jim

I feel for you with a brother in Iraq. My much younger half-brother used to be in N Ireland, Bosnia and such with the Special Forces, but was invalided out of the Army after a motorcycle accident. One of his very closest friends was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq not so very long ago.

People like Kember should be kept well clear of war zones.

The last I heard, there were reports and complaints that Kember didn't show an ounce of gratitude to his rescuers. He is obviously not only a fool, but a very bitter and twisted one.

He did read out a statment on tv in which he did thank his rescuers (this is fact). He didnt look very convincing though (this is my opinion).

I have come the conclusion that Kember is nothing but a very stupid old man. We should all feel sorry for his family who have to live with this pathetic prat.

He is yet another example of the idiocy of allowing religion to determine your behaviour.

Jim

I'm sorry I had forgotten about Tom King and I apologise if my comments caused any offence.

It seems now so long since his body was found and the concentration of the UK press was always on Norman Kember.

However.....I still feel that there is more to come out on this story.
