BT Home Hub won't behave
Posted by: Tam on 09 May 2008
So, for internet, I have a standard BT Home Hub which I connect to wirelessly using 128 bit WEP encryption with no problems whatsoever. I'm connecting with my mac and other people have never had any problems connecting with their PCs, until this evening. Neither windows laptop will connect. I've checked the security settings on both, tried entering keys as both hex and ascii but to no avail.
Now, it's true that between now and the last time anyone else was connected, I've had completely reset the base station, but everything is set back up as it was.
In short, I'm well and truly stumped, so any suggestions gratefully appreciated.
regards, Tam

I had trouble with mine a few weeks back, and it seemed to be running very slowly. I ended up calling the help line and a very helpful lady in India logged onto my Mac remotely and whatever she did seemed to help. No problems since, so maybe a call to them tomorrow might help?

BT home hubs are cheap tat in a plastic box.
You do not need them in order to use bts service any wireless ADSL modem will do it, probably better.

As for the usual snipe at BT ,if you can understand each other the help desk usually does. Unfortunately they have to work through their question sheet every time. When ours started playing up they arranged a replacement hub to sent out (2 arrived). I think I re-installed,the only pain is putting the encryption keys back in as the hub numbers are different.
It seems a s good as any other cheap tat plastic box, or are all the others hand fettled from a solid billet of aluminium?

No sure exactly what is not working Tam but I would first of all check the hub via direct network cable connection. If all is well I would then move the machine that is trying to connect via wireless right next to the hub and try it from there. Side by side I would check keys in use, make sure the tick is next to the correct key 1-4 etc etc. If that still does not work also try changing the channel number in use. "trouble shooting homehub connections" brings up a load on google too. Fozz

Thanks for the suggestions (well apart from garyi - the home hub may be cheap, but it's free and I don't really want to buy a replacement, what's more I've had far less trouble from it than from my old, and much more expensive, airport extreme base station, for which extreme would only fit to describe the pathetic range).
What's odd is that my laptop is connecting wirelessly fine (as is everything else via the ethernet cable). I suspect I may just have to reset the whole thing. I'm loth to call technical support - it usually means a long time on hold, followed by a long script of getting me to try all the things I've already done

p.s. Chris, you're certainly more trusting than me - there's no way I'd allow BT to log into my computer remotely.

Well, I've just made it work, but christ only knows why.
At first, last night I thought it might be that I'd changed channels (I've been having speed problems this week, which turned out to be because in the middle of Edinburgh everyone has wireless and they're all on the same channel, so I manually set it to 13, which seems never to be used. However, given that doesn't work with all devices I set it to four (since BT's 'automatic' setting doesn't seem to pay any attention to what's around).
This morning I thought I'd see what happened if I put the channel selection back to automatic and boom the other laptop connects!

One other thing BT are renowned for crap customer service, its totally famous. So why do you people continue to use them for broadband?
Posted on: 10 May 2008 by Tam
They're terrible in that regard, but then I'm not sure how much worse they are than most other people. If anything, I've found dealing with your beloved Apple's customer support even more frustrating.
Actually, the last time I phoned BT, after they had failed to resolve a problem with my BT Vision (they hadn't switched on something that enabled the on demand stuff), they put me through to a supervisor (who, from his northern accent I suspect may have been back in the UK) who sorted everything out very promptly and efficiently and cut £5/m of the rate. Thinking about it, it's one of the better bits of service I've come across recently.

Tam you seem determined to compare everything to your hatred for Apple I presume because I like apple you are trying to get at me because I got at BT.
Do you have a particular affiliation with BT or something?
They are shite.

BT customer service on their BB provision is monumemtal in in hoplessness, but if you have another provider, their BB will still travel down a BT line to the residence! It keeps things simpler to have one company responsible for both, though the situation is hardly beyond improvement! A friend of mine had a sitauation with a non-BT BB provider ... [insert story of passing the buck ... for months!] ... On my advice her reverted to BT BB, and was only left with a Bill from the former BB provider, which he paid for a quiet life!
When there is a way of inexpensively using satelites of mibile phones as an alternative to the landline, then I think BT may up its game. In the meantime, then ... Aaaaaagh!

sure moving from BT is a "risk" especially if your business demands no down time. However things had got too bad for me, slow in the evening around 4mbit. (maybe the broadband TV from BT takes a cut). Also spending forever onto India going through the crass questions about master sockets over and over again did me in.
I took the plunge and moved, only 2hours down. Now get 18.9mbit down and 2mbit up off the same line. could not be more happy. new provider BE unlimited.

Gary, I have not (and have never had) any affiliation to BT.
I keep mentioning Apple for two reasons. First I've had quite shocking service from them over the years (every bit as bad as from BT), despite the fact their products are significantly more expensive. Second, from your posts, it seems you have a high opinion of a company that, in my view, is not better than the one you are so vitriolic about.
You're mistaken when you say I hate Apple. I don't. I love a lot of their products. Every computer and MP3 player I have ever owned has been from Apple. The problem is, their customer service is rubbish (like most other electronics companies) and their quality control is pretty average too. Their product design is pretty good, and it's largely why I buy them (though I think 10.5 is a step backwards in a number of ways), but design isn't the subject of this thread. However, they have treated me with contempt over the years and the only reason they retain my custom is rather like Churchill's pronouncement about democracy in that all the other products or computers are worse.
