92R Pre-amp

Posted by: Tuan on 04 June 2001

I just bought a new 92R pre-amp (a very good deal at Bay Bloor Radio in Toronto Canada). I plan to pair it with my CD3. I am now looking for a Naim amp to match with this combo. I understand that this 92R pre-amp can be powered by the 180 power amplifier. Can it be powered by the 250 power amplifier? Also, can I buy the new flatcap (Flatcap2) for it?

Yes. I have the Krell as well. It is a very good amplifier. At this moment I use it to power the home theatre driving B&W 805S speakers resting on Target reference stands. I got the 92R on sale since Bay Bloor Radio in Toronto Canada no longer carry the Naim equipment due to slow sale. I got this 92R at less than 2/3 of the market price with full warranty and brand new. It is a beautiful pre-amp at the price I got. I am now looking to get a new amp and perhaps a flatcap too. Would the new Flatcap2 power this preamp or I have to find the old Flatcap for it?

The Flatcap 2 will work nicely with the 92R and the CD5 it looks like you'll be needing!

Jay, why do you think that Tuan needs a CD5 - he said he owns a CD3? I have never heard the CD5, so is the 5 that much better than a CD3 or 3.5?

Or should he spend his money for a HiCap for his CD3 / CD3.5...?

Apologies I didn't see that Tuan has a CD3! I must have been half asleep!

If Tuan already has a CD3 I don't think it's worth getting a CD5, better to go all the way to a CDX.

But, if he has a CD3.5 then I'd recommend a FC2 as a cost effective upgrade because it'll improve both the 92R and CD3.5 for little more than the original FC.

If he has "grand plans" in place then a hi-cap may be the way to go long-term. I'm using a FC2 on my CD3.5/72 and found it to be very worthwhile.

Thank you for your advises. I will buy a hicap to power the 92R as the second step. The hicap has a large transformer just to power one piece of equipment (it will be the 92R) and it is to my belief that the internal connections to the amplifier is better quality than that of the flatcap (or flatcap2). I probably go for a 250 amp to complete the setup since this way will leave room for potential upgrade of the source or pre-amp in the long run. I am so far very happy with the CD3 (may be that is all I need). The 250 will surely make me dance.
