Unity Gain on a Naim 32.5

I am curious what unity gain is on later per-amps ?

I have my 32.5 working with my AV2 and I set the volume just past 2.00pm on the dial. All db checked and it sounds very good. I can obvioulsy set the volume lower or higher and adjust the levels elsewhere, what is unity gain and do modern per-amps simply switch in a fixed unity gain circuit ?

Basically it saves you having to mess about setting the volume control on your stereo preamp to the same level every time when listening to multichannel sources. It may also bypass the preamp circuitry altogether hence potentially giving a better sound, but hopefully someone with more technical knowledge than me will confirm/refute that.
