'Endless Wire' - The Who
Posted by: J.N. on 30 October 2006
Released today, 24 years after the last Who album. Only Townshend and Daltrey remain of course, but there's some stellar support from Zak Starkey (Ringo's son), Pino Palladino, 'Rabbit' Bundrick and others.
Townshend plays a variety of instruments, and produced it. The album opens up with a synthesiser motif reminiscent of 'Baba O Riley/Won't Get Fooled Again' and there's evidence that Pete can still rock out with a dirty guitar.
Some great inflammatory lyrics on 'A Man in a Purple Dress' - a pop at the worrying power of religious fundamentalism:-
"Men above men, or prats with your high hats"
And:-
"Your staff, your stick, your special cap. They'll protect you in Hell? What Crap!"
Great stuff.
There are extensive sleeve notes on the recording process, and the resultant recording quality seems to be pretty good with little or no compression. There are fantastic dynamics on 'Mike Post Theme' and Townshend plays a mean guitar on 'It's Not Enough'.
Lots of info on the album may be found here on good old Wikipedia.
Enjoy.
