Electronic music recommendations

Posted by: Simon Perry on 12 September 2003

Does anyone have some recommendations for excellent albums at the plinky plonky end of the electronic music genre?
To give you some idea of what floats my boat I really like Herrmann & Kleine, Markant, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Ovuca, Capitol K etc.

What are the really essential releases that I am missing?

Plaid - "Rest Proof Clockwork" : "Even the off-beats have off-beats" quoth Tony L.

Mouse on Mars - "Idiolog" : Makes Aphex Twin look like a #1 single selling, chart seeking sell out.

Akufen - "My Way" : Blissfull "mircohouse". Quite wonderful and I normally hate this sort of thing.

DNTEL - "Life is Full of Possibilities" : Brilliant blend of glitch and pop.

The Notwist - "Neon Golden" : More glitch-pop but much more poppy and less glitchy than DNTEL. Sounds like New Order remixed by Boards of Canada (he said somewhat misleadingly).

Manitoba - "Up in Flames" : Glitch + cut n paste + found sound + beats + pop tunes = one of the best albums of this year.

Thanks, Matthew. That was a great list! Plaid's "Rest Proof Clockwork" seems the least interesting of those, but it's still good enough to up in my player.

It looks like I'm going to be spending some money today. Smile

Give Dark Soho's "Sun spot" a go, if you can find it - it's more downtempo psy-trance (so not "bangin'" but has some cool crunching guitar work on a couple of the tracks as well...

You could try Astral Projection's "Another world" if you want something a bit more upbeat but very melodic - although it's a bit repetitive...

Thanks for these recommendations - I will buy many of them. The Manitoba sounds great. Nick, I forgot to mention that I have lots of Autechre and mu-ziq, but I will check out some Biosphere if its in a similar vein.
Cheers

Where's the best place to start with Biosphere?
I am about to hit Covent Garden!

Alex -

Have you heard Eno's 'Music for Films' from the early seventies? It's not all electronic, but there are a lot of early synths some plonking and lots of plinking on it and it's haunting stuff.

I have tried (really hard) to like Mouse on Mars but have come to the conclusion that they are taking the piss. They're just a waste of time and money.

My favourite is "Patashnik", maybe a bit dated now, have not played it in along time.

You must also buy the Dntel album for the reasons Matthew mentioned.

When does PGMG arrive?

Ludders (who doesn't like rugby)

Alex said "I am not as sold on Manitoba as everyone else seems to be"

You might like the previous album "Start Breaking My Heart" more though as its more of a straight electronic/IDM-y than "Up in Flames".

Biosphere: Microgravity. Better than Pataschnik. The risk is great, the decision of course is yours.

Responses so far indicate a predeliction for ElectroniA rather than ElectronicS, so I won't recommend artists in the power electronics field such as Thee Grey Wolves, Whitehouse, Blackhouse, Organum, Powerfield, Maschinezimmer 412 etc.

Instead, I endorse :

Akufen - The Psychometry series is good + My Way
Biosphere
Notwist
Mouse on Mars
Eno - Fourth Wordl,: Possible Musics Vol. 1 is a favourite

and add:

Arovane (very fragile & melodic)
Luomo (esp. The present lover)
Pole
Mum
Murcof
Rothko
Seefeel
SND
Tarentel
The Bionaut
The Modernist
Jah Wobble & Deep Space

.. well in fact a lot of the stuff I buy is like that.

DS

OTD - Electric Nature - Electric Nature.

Thanks for all the replies to my thread - really useful. In the end I never made it out to the shops on Friday, but I intend to hoof it over to Selectadisc / rough trade records on Monday lunchtime. What I can't get there I will order on tinternet.

I've been listening to Fennesz a lot recently. Field Recordings (on Touch Records) is a really nice compilation. He creates a really immense wave of textured electronic sounds, quite delicate, and often extremely beautiful. Not ambient, exactly, but no jackhammer beats either. Endless Summer is another good one.

Try any of the 'Process' Albums on the Traum Schallplatten label

Hi,
Not sure whether this shud be under the dance music thread or this one...bugger.
Anyway, have you listened to the Mirwais Cd (Madge's producer). Its sort of a hybrid electronic/dance collection of tracks, and you do have to be in the mood to listen to it. It does have serious bass on it for anyone re demo purposes...

Quecksilber Label

Selectadisc yields up some booty

This lunchtime I have bought:

Manitoba - Up in flames
Biosphere - Substrata / Man with a movie camera double CD
DNTEL - Life is full of possibilities
Arab Strap - Shy Retirer EP (wrong thread)
Murcof - Martes (utterly random purchase but based on this review I should be OK http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?merchID=7320

Thanks for everyone's recommendations. I tried to obtain the Eno and Fennesz but was thwarted.
Anyway, I will give my purchases a good listen over the next few days.
Cheers

Sorry if these have been mentioned.

Dub Tractor: More or Less Mono. This is a real grower. I thought it too slow to start but find myself putting this on more and more often.

Lucky Pierre, Hyponogogia. I like this one, pretty chilled with strings as well.

United Future Organaization. Totally cool cover! Rel chill down this is, another grower but not as good as Dub Tractor

Fila Brazillia, Black Market Gardening. One of their more doark albums. Slow beats with belly aching bass lines.

Raymond Scott

A true pioneer of electronic music. Get Manhattan Research, Inc a beautifully packaged and annoatated two-CD compilation of music from 1953-69. This s an absolutely essential listen for anyone interested in the genesis and development of electronic music.

If you like that, try one of the three Soothing Sounds For Baby CDs.

He also wrote a lot of rchestral and electronic music for cartoons - this can be found on Reckless Nights & Turkish Twilights

Thanks for all these recommendations - please keep them coming. I am more interested in the slower dark stuff than mad Aphex on Acid / Squarepusher type stuff, of which I have quite a lot already. Once i have digested some of my recent purchases I will post up some reviews.
Cheers /thanks
