Rick Wright of Pink Floyd has died, according to the BBC

Cancer was the cause, he was just 65.

A very very sad loss. He was (especially early on in the Floyd's career) a very distinctive keyboard player, with that wonderful "Eastern" Farfisa sound. Wrote or co-wrote some great tracks, too.

Floyd founder Wright dies at 65

Pink Floyd keyboard player and founder member Richard Wright has died aged 65 from cancer.

Wright appeared on the group's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside lead guitarist Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason.

Dave Gilmour joined the band at the start of 1968 while Barrett left the group shortly afterwards.

Wright penned songs on classic albums including Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here.

Wright's spokesman said: "The family of Richard Wright, founder member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness that Richard died today after a short struggle with cancer.

"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time".

Really very sad indeed. Another musical hero passes away. I always thought he was a very decent man. Hopefully he left this planet on good terms with Roger.

Well I suppose that resolves the will they/won't they reform debate once and for all. Thank god they had the sense to do Live 8 before it was too late.

Bugger.

I shall treasure my memories of the last David Gilmour gig at the Albert even more. Rick always seemed to be a genuinely decent human being. Very talented but not egotistic at all.

Very very sad news - Rick seemed a real decent bloke and added enormously to Pink Floyd's music. His organ playing from Piper onwards was what gave Floyd that unique feeling and Rick was a very good song writer when he wanted to be

Remember a day before today
A day when you were young
Free to play along with time
Evening never comes

Sing a song that can't be sung
Without the morning's kiss
Queen you shall be if you wish
Look for your king

Why can't we play today?
Why can't we stay this way?

Climb your favourite apple tree
Try to catch the sun
Hide from your little brother's gun
Dream yourself away
Why can't we reach the sun?
Why can't we blow the years away?
Blow away

Sad news indeed.

Ricks swirling organ sound (Leslie speaker ?) was a central point of Pink Floyd's sound. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy as well.

RIP Rick.
