SNAPS on a Headline?
Posted by: kid spatula on 08 October 2003
Please help....
I have a headline and a SNAPS arriving in the post soon.
Am I right in thinking that only a SNAPS2 will power the headline, as it has a 5 pin output?
Does anyone know how much *roughly* a re-cap and conversion to 5pins will cost from Naim?

Given that you can power a Headline via a NAPSC (several people have commented as such) and the NAPSC only provides one supply I can't see why you would need a SNAPS2. The headline is powered by a SLIC, if this is the same as the one that powers the 82/102 then it only has 2 pins, so I don't see why you would need a SNAPS2.
What you might need is a suitable 4pin -> SLIC cable (I can't remember if the standard SNAPS only has 4 pin o/p's)
All the above is not with experiance of a headline, just my understanding, so could be wrong.

Greeny's right. All you need is a SLIC that goes from 4-to-2, instead of 5-to-2. The Headline uses only one rail, so modifying the SNAPS to dual-rail (which is only possible with a SNAPS2, btw) would be superluous. Recapping might help a bit, but we're talking a device that works "ok" with a NAPSC, and certainly sounds great with a SNAPS.
BTW, I run my own Headline with a SNAPS2. However, I'm about to create a special "Y" cable so that I can power my 102's NAPSC socket and the Headline from the same SNAPS2, finally making simultaneous use of both rails. Since neither of these devices uses much power, and since my Headline is used primarily for studio monitoring (yes it's overkill), I expect the performance to be sufficient for my needs.

Mike and Greeny have got it right. I use a SNAPS to power my Headline. Just need to get the right Slic to connect it up, no mods required.
Sounds great BTW.

Go ahead with the Snaps on the Headline, no questions.
I would go for a standard 5 pin SLIC and change one 4 pins socket for a new 5 with lock on the Snaps:
If you want to go with a hicap or Flatcap later, you won't have to change the cable/plug; the 5 pin Slic is standard, you will have to wait for a 4 pins one; a new socket will improve the contact.
And by the way, dual rail your Snaps, nothing to gain for the headline but if you want to use it for otherthing...Unless you do like Mike, in this case, separate supplies are easier to work with.

All opinions are my own, and reflect those of the organisation i work for, even if not stipulated.

On the subject of powering a Headline(2), and appologies if i am hijacking this thread, i am currently powering mine via a 112. I also have a Flatcap 2, could the headline be powered via the FC2, and if so would this offer any benefits.
I know that it would be best to power with an additional PSU but cant afford this at the momeant so would like to get the best from what i have. Is it true that powering the headline via the 112 is screwing the star wiring up as i have been told.

grrr. get yr own topic.
only joking.
my tuppence worth is that the flatcap 2 would be ideally suited to powering your headline via a slic and would sound better than your current setup.
back to ME for a minute, i spoke to naim and they said i would have to get my dealer to convert my 5 pin slic to a 4 pin. thanks mr dane - once again naim's customer service was superb, but i'm treading well worn ground here.

RIP OFF?
My dealer (naming no names) has quoted me £60 to convert my 5 pin SLIC to 4 pin.
Is this a total rip-off?
Can I do this myself (if so, some advice how to would be nice)?

That's ludicrous! Find yourself the 4-pin plug at an electronics surplus store, and then go to any technician who knows his way around a soldering bench.
BTW, I think that's more expensive than the SLIC itself.

YES, definitively YES.
It`s about this price in CAN$ (60$), if you keep the 5 pin Din plug, taxes, 2 way shipping included.
Ask you dealer to confirm the price, and go elsewhere if he stand behind that price. Sorry for him, but it is not a way to keep (or gain) customers.
Some Naim (an other brand too) dealers have a kind of policy to punish people buying used gears: You`ve bought your Headline used, you need a special cable, you have no choice to buy it from me, you will pay.

i did the soldering myself - i took the 4 pin din off the grey snaic that came with the snaps and soldered it onto the end of the slic. it sounds great.
2 solders - live and earth - for £60. This is 10-20 minutes work for someone with experience and i find it insulting that they think i am stupid enough to pay this!
i am tempted to name and shame the dealer.... but don't want to annoy anyone at naim. needless to say, i will never buy any expensive piece of kit off of those guys.
