Another iMAC question
Posted by: BigH47 on 03 May 2010
This seems to be happening more frequently:-
My iMAC begins to run slowly. When I look at the iStats info it says firefox-bin is running at 80% or more. Stopping and starting Firefox returns things to a more normal 3% although it does run around 8% quite a lot, other listed items seem to be around 2-3 %.
Any thoughts. Please keep any replies simple if possible.

Don't use firefox. Its not all it cracked up to be on mac.
That being said i am willing to bet when firefox goes tits you have some flash based item running in the browser, i.e. adverts, etc. This usually is the cause of crashes.
I would ignore istats and look at activity monitor in the utilties folder, launch it and look at all processes by cpu and if anything running at 100% you have a crash occuring, usually one of the browsers, and usually because of flash.
Its why Jobs hates flash!

Firefox is a massive hog, always has been, especially if you are a tab intensive user.
I use google chrome or safari. Both run much better on Mac's.

Shame is that Safari is a piece of crap to use after Firefox. Tab handling and saving is a nightmare.
Unless there is a way to save with the tabs in use being there the next time Safari is started.
Not tried Chrome on a MAC though.

I think it's a question of what you're used to Howard. Having moved from Firefox I really like Safari. When did you last try it?
Posted on: 03 May 2010 by Absolute
BigH, there is a 'reopen all windows from last session' option in safari, so the need to actually save the open tabs before closing is eliminated. That said, I agree safari isn't a great browser, and why I shifted over to chrome.
Have you tried omniweb? Its a little strange, but could be worth a try.

Another chrome user here

You could try some of the tweaks here.
I had trouble with Firefox hogging memory at one time and things eased a bit after applying some of these.

It will be Flash, especially if you have multiple tabs open, over a period of time...It will just slowly and increasingly hog the CPU...
I haven't used Firefox for a bit, but I think from memory there is a Flash blocker built in (allowing you to click on Flash content to load as and when you want to)...Give it a try perhaps ?
The sonner that Flash is consigned to content delivery history the better for all the web....I see even Microsoft is now putting its weight behind the adoption of H.264 video and recognising the future expansion of HTML5...
As for saving multiple Tabs in Safari, easy peasy....If you have multiple tabs open, you can either go to Bookmarks in the menu and select Save Bookmark For These # Tabs which will then give you an easy to use 1 click Bookmark (identified by a small grey square) to open all those tabs in your next session, OR after quitting a Safari session with multiple tabs, the next time you open the application you will notice in History there is an option to open all last used windows/tabs from previous session.....

Is there no refresh button on Safari?
Posted on: 03 May 2010 by SC
Yes, the 3/4 circle arrow to the right of the address bar...
Posted on: 03 May 2010 by BigH47
Oh yes, thankyou.

OK I have been using Safari for a day or so. Apart from the strange way it seems to handle tabs, ie I can't get a blank "new" tab, it seems OK.
I notice in the Activity Monitor that there is a Flash plug in running, I thought this was a no no?

Go to Safari Preferences - 3rd option down in the General section are the choices for new tabs - you can get a 'blank tab' option there....

I can't tell you how many times I went through the options in the preferences, and missed it every time.
Thankyou AGAIN!

Ha Ha!....Preferences always have a knack of doing that - it's always just the one you want that seems to hide itself away....!!

You guys have a lot to answer for here - mine finally arrives on Monday, all being well.
Looked on at these threads for years - then looked at my wheezing pc over the holiday and thought, you need to be put out to pasture - badly, either that or flying lessons from a very high window. Then pulled the trigger on an imac and a dummies guide.
This should be fun, I hope.

I'm sure it will be, my iMAC and dummies guide arrived about 16 months ago, I found that a I haven't been restarting etc hardly ever. I don't feel the need to fiddle about too much, mostly it just does. There are a few quirks in the way it just works, but there is plenty of help here and online should you need it.

OK I may make an idiot of my self again, but here goes.
I'm looking at my Activity Monitor and there is a Process called Autobahn with 61 threads, A] I don't what it does and B] what threads?

According to the interwebs, its something to do with a media player called nextdef.
If you have HiDef movies on your hardrive just use xbmc.

Thanks for that garyi, so do you think I just delete autobahn it doesn't seem to ring any bells.
It is saying 61 threads what are threads in this context?
Is xbmc on board or is it something I have to D/load?

I wouldn't do that Howard - there'll be nowhere for your internet traffic to go!
On Mac matters; having finally got SWMBO over to the fruity side (so to speak), she's now realised Sage stuff isn't Mac compatible. Does anyone know if there are any accounts software packages available for Macs which can be recommended please?

Tony - just get her set up using some PC emulation on the Mac...?
Posted on: 06 May 2010 by Steve2701
Tony,
Exactly part of our problem at work as well. I understand that there is a Sage 'solution' for their programs - a quick google will confirm that, but having to learn that program over again in a new format - hmm.
The only thing I need on mine is office, which I will be sorting when it comes out in new format at the end of this year. Till then I think I will make do with the free 'open office'
I for one just dont want to go putting windows onto the imac I just (well v nearly) escaped from the darn thing.
