This week on 'Later Live ...'

Posted by: 555 on 29 April 2008

A new thread to avoid confusion (I hope!).

On tonight we have the original line-up of Pentangle, a recently re-formed James,
Mable John, Melody Gardot, the Gutter Twins, & Operator Please.

I hope so Chris,
but I have a horrible feeling it's going to make me feel very old!

I already feel very old, so how much worse can it get? Winker

I am very old according to another forum member - although I like George Formby I wasn't around when he first recorded Mr Wu's A Window Cleaner Now - well much as I have never liked the format of Later ... I can't miss Pentangle.

Why not just give the others the night off though and let Jacqui McShee, John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Danny Thompson and Terry Cox do the whole show.

And that's what I thought, when I saw the programme Winker

I did not get there name though.

That will be "The Gutter Twins". They were OK, though quite a mix of various bands IMO.
Enjoyed Pentangle.

...I was going to start a thread about Was (Not Was) who were on last weeks show and were excellent

I've loved the Was's since their very 1st Ze Records single "Out Come The Freaks"

Surely they were (are) one of music's most underrated bands?

I liked the Pentangle and the clip of Humph - otherwise was unimpressed - didn't like James at all. Found the show's host unnecessary - prefer the TOTP2 style graphics.

I still think the best pop show the BBC ever did was Disco-2 way back in the very early seventies. It had no host, no chat, just great music. Here's a clip

They were not realy a band but two very good producers that did a bit of there own stuff now and again.
I dont have a credit card, but i have got this pit bull.
Was a good song by them.

Ok I guess "band" may be stretching it but Sweet Pea Atkinson and (Sir) Harry Bowens are long standing vocalists along with "Don and Dave" Was

I reckon they are a sort of mutant Disco cousin of Steely Dan - cherry picking guest vocalists to sing their surreal left-field songs ......If you get the chance listen to the early (and weird) "Wheel Me Out" 12" on Ze Records ..The touring band seen on "Later" sounded superb - what chance some UK dates?

The bloke with the tatts is Mark Lanegan. Ex of the Screaming Trees and collaborator with Isobel Campbell (ex Belle & Sebastian).

The album Saturnalia is more of the same, very good it is too.

Seeing the original line-up of Pentangle last night on Later was excellent.

Also enjoyed a couple of the other acts, seemed a better show than the previous ones I had seen a bit of.

Pentangle were good but they did make me realise how old I must look these days!

I thought they looked damn good, they looked like themselves, no facade, which stood out compared to some of the others bands on the show recently.

They looked comfortable together again, Danny Thompson always looks really cool anyway.

Damn 555. How did you hack into my online family album? Roll Eyes

Sorry Chris! Red Face

Strong line-up this week with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Spiritualized,
Emmylou Harris, Chris Difford, The Fratellis and Santogold.

That's a pretty strong line-up for one show!

Alison! Not the sharpest pencil in the box is she !!

It was a good show though. I was shocked at Pentangle. It looked like one of my mums coffee mornings, but...

Try the Screaming Trees album Uncle Anesthesia even if only for the track Bed Of Roses.

This weeks line up was great I thought with Alison Krauss & Percy, and Emmylou too (who I think is a Goddess even though she's old enough to be my dinner lady at school). Yup, this week was a good one, and Friday is still to come. See, it's worth keeping an eye on it.
I thought Percy looked more like a 65 year old Mick Hucknell

OK, maybe not. Maybe Robert Plant has turned into Mick Hucknall & Hucknall has turned into Malcolm McLaren
