DVI to HDMI on DVD5

Posted by: Flojoe on 31 July 2008

Evening all.
I,ve just had a DVD5 installed into the rest of my Naim system. The dealer used a Van de Hull DVI to HDMI converter plus a chord silver 1.3 HDMI cable to get the picture to my Panasonic Plasma. Problem is the picture keeps on dissappearing or changes colour due to the weight of the HDMI cable altering the connection contact of the converter. This also happened on the shop demo model i loaned. Has anyone else had same problem, and how did you resolve it.
Many Thanks

I just use a QED DVI to HDMI lead into my HDMI switcher. Saves messing with converters.

Is the DVI to HDMI convertor screwed into the DVI socket on the DVD5 ? I have a Chord convertor and it is screwed into the DVI socket and then have a long Bettercables HDMI cable in it hanging down the back.

If it is screwed in and still comes out, then I'd suggest you speak to the dealer about how appropriate the HDMI cable is that they have placed there as this should not have the weight to pull it out.

I had the same problem when I used my DVD5 with a projector, in fact the coonections were so bad that most of the time there was no signal at all!. I solved the problem by using the component video output instead! In fact I was told by Naim that they used this connection method at shows etc. since it gives a smoother, more film-like image. Also there are a whole range of adjustments on the DVD5 that only apply to the component outputs, so it almost looks to me that this is really the preferred output anyway, although the manual states that the digital output gives the higest quality image. If you are set on using the digital connection then I know none of this helps, but maybe just give the component output a try and see what you think.

what colour is it changing to as i was once told if it has a pink tint its an hdcp problem and if it has a green tint its a cable problem ( if my memory serves me right)

Since Peter raised the issue of component vs. digital regarding picture quality, I wanna say something. Component doesn't support video signals beyond 720p. If you wanna view a picture at 1080 (either interlaced or progressive) then you must go with either DVI or HDMI. I'm not familiar with the DVD5/N-vi so I don't know how applicable is the concept of 1080i/p with those machines but I just wanted to comment on the difference between component and digital.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

I have a DVD5 connected to a Sony 40D3000 via a QED DVI-HDMI cable. Sometimes the picture is great on DVD sometimes the picture is cr@p.

This is a variation with disks not a variation with time. Is this a problem with the quality of the DVDs, ie not all disks are equally well recorded or a problem with TV/DVD player incompatibility.

Could I improve things with a component conection (which lead would I try? I need a 3m RCA to BNC component lead) or do I just accept that the picture with some DVDs is sub-optimal?

TIA

Hi Richard;
I always see variable picture quality with DVDs, although I use an LG universal player off component cables. Are al your DVDs originals? I found the worst picture quality to come off the far-east imported bootlegs. They dominate the market here in Saudi but I'm not sure if u have them where u live. Downloaded movies off hte internet also have variable quality due to various codecs and compression.

At the end of the day, even with all original DVDs and from respectable studios you will still see variations in picture quality. Example? Master & Commander has has beautiful images while Seven Years in Tibet is so-so. Smile That's just like the variable quality of sound on CDs.

All DVDs are originals, so I guess its variation in DVD quality.

What are "these"?

Roy,
I have screwed in the DVI converter but it seems to go past the contact points when I do this so I now keep it loose as it enables me to 'wiggle' it about to get the picture back, not neccessary what I expected to do on a £ 2,600 machine !! Does Naim recommend a connector do you know ?

I gather you're not talking about the original!

Flojoe,

We tend to use the Chord DVI-HDMI convertor that locks into the back of the DVD5. We don't experience problems when we do this. The best solution of course is to use a direct DVI-HDMI lead.

DVDs vary considerably in quality although they're becoming generally better. Blu-rays also vary but the variance doesn't seem as marked and it depends a lot on the original quality of the film.
