Guilty Pleasures

Posted by: steve61 on 27 January 2009

The Chicago Transit tread prompted the guilty pleasures thought. I came across Peter Skellern's 'Sentimentally Yours' compilation cd. not having listened for a long time since disposing of my lp's the guy still sounds great, so musical and so sincere in his delivery and production, which is at the good end of kitchen sink.
Anybody heard him or have some guilty pleasures they listen to they wish to share ?
Steve.

I've thought about starting a similar thread before, but I didn't think many people would be brave enough to come clean.

Even uber-cool djs like Soulwax play stuff like Britney and Dolly and Sugababes these days, and you should see some of the random recent singles in my iTunes. Alternatively, look on YouTube for the video for Fools Gold From the Block - an epic Stone Roses vs J-Lo combination - my favourite song of all time... with four dodgy-looking Mancs added in! So bad, it's good.

I have a soft spot for old musicals - King and I, Sound of Music, South Pacific, Meet Me in St Louis..... but don't tell anybody. Red Face

Peter Skellern is superb - never ever be ashamed to admit you like his music - I've seen him live in a show with Richard Stilgoe called He Who Dares; it was named after the film of the same name in which Lewis Collins played an SAS captain called Peter Skellern.

The album I have is on vinyl and is a set of songs that Peter wrote for a BBC2 TV series of small 30 minute musicals called Happy Endings. It is so good that Sir Ray Davies himself could have penned it.

1. Lancashire Lullaby
2. Oh Boy Harold
3. Curses
4. Lancashire Lullaby - Reprise
5. An Unexpected Visitation (From The BBC)
6. Socrates
7. I'll Love You Till I Die
8. Another Sinner On His Way
9. Jerusalem The Golden
10. Changed
11. I'll Love You Till I Die - Reprise
12. Municipal Melody
13. Don't Look With Pity
14. Hello Is That You?
15. Daphne's Catastrophe
16. Life
17. Someday Soon
18. Birdmen
19. Slow Down
20. Dogfight
21. Someday Soon - Reprise

I also have a hi-fi test record that is rather different in that it has real music and the idea is that if these tracks don't sound good then something is a miss - the best track on it is Don't Hang Up by 10CC, but very close behind is Peter Skellern singing Love is the Sweetest Thing - really really great performance and features Peter backed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

OK I'll confess for the common amusement - Peter Skellern's "You're a Lady" was the first 7" single I ever bought - 36 years back when I were but 12. Didn't tell my mates as we were in Bowie worshipping mode.

Still think it's a damn good song.

I remember loving this album - which I suspect I had on a compact cassette - oh those endless discusions about the merits of various TDK C90 tapes.
Sadly it appears to be not available in a CD format (if it was I would have just bought it!)
