Hi,

I think the silver and wood looks nice, the black looks cheap, but smoked glass!!! that went out years ago, I think some one said that clear glass sounds better (haven't Mana changed to clear) but it could mean that you can tweak it!!! or endlessly argue about smoked/clear on the forum!!!

Pete,

It's me that champions clear glass over smoked. I used to market a support years ago & did a lot of clear vs smoked tests. The clear won every time.
Funny how after years of telling every one this that Mana 'discovered' clear glass.

I can tell you chaps, we listened to lots of glass, we did not pick the one we did because it sounds less good than the clear version.

What's the forum's opinion of stacking Naim hifi equipment on the styrofoam innards of the shipping boxes?

It gives a much different esthetic effect than oil rigs or wood, and damps vibration. Tough to level though, without a sharp knife and a very good eye. And it's hard to stack very high. Still I think that's what I'll use....

Regards.

Paul,

I bet you could fill a bible with the utter
nonsense we send sometimes to this otherwise
excellent and funny forum.

Have you never felt the desire to publish
some gems in a specially dedicated thread,
of course without naming anyone ?

This way we could share your laughter big grin

(hope this input is not going to be part of it !!!)

There have been some real gems, I do not think it would be good for us to poke fun at the individuals, might go down the wrong way.

black is back - so out it's in! That said, cherry is also appealing. Mmmmmm...

Although clear glass is vastly better as a component in other stands (you know who you are), I'm quite prepared to accept that smoking works better with this particular design, as it's a pretty complex structure, and hence may well work as a piece.

Having said that, a very informal "straw poll" conducted among a few of us who heard this years "Big Bristol" system and also last year's equivalent (both on the last day), proved interesting.

Last year:
CDSII / 52 / SuperCap / 500 / passive DBLs on Hutter.

This year:
CDSII / 52 / SuperCap / SNAXO / SuperCap / 3 x 500 / DBLs on Fraims.

While accepting that attempting to hold a sonic memory of a particular event over the 12 intervening months is fraught with its own problems, and also that both systems were fabulous to listen to, the concensus was that last year's system communicated music slightly better (flow, drama, emotion) than this year's.

This is surprising, as the improvements in this year's system (about 22000 pounds worth...) should have been blindingly obvious and not even debateable.

The obvious culprit would be the Fraims... although obviously in a show situation there are loads of other potential variables.

(Ducking for cover) wink

Best;

My memory is that this years bristol set up sounded fantastic, especially by day three, certainly more so than last years passive system. I think there are a number of variables influencing system performance. Memory and state of mind at both times are big factors. Last year will always stick in my mind because that was the first time we all got to hear how good a single 500 is. Perhaps we are getting used to them! I am sure three 500's in an active system are even more influenced by mains quality and warm up time.

I think that time spent with the stands is the best way to judge their performance. I remember all three bristol rooms really working well this year. Perhaps the stands were doing their thing
