Ikea Leads 'Tube'

Posted by: Blobdang on 14 August 2002

My beloved wife on a mission from Ikea, has come home with a flexible black plastic tube (about an inch in diameter - together with some cable ties typically used to tidy up computer leads) that is designed to tidy up the bag of my gear - you know the taunt "..spaghetti junction etc".

Is this ok to gather up interconnects or strictly a no-no?

Hi Geoff
Generally a bad idea. Some people swear by cable dressing (carefully running them so that signal leads avoid mains, separating them, ensuring they cross at right angles). I'm a half believer - it makes a difference but I wouldn't take it to the ultimate. Why not try it when she's out and see if you can tell any difference. If you can't, everyone ends up happy. If you can, tell her you will need an upgrade to compensate for the detrimental effects.

At the risk of starting another cable dressing thread, I'd say it is fine to bundle signal cables together (after all you have 2 channels in one cable), and its fine to bundle power leads together. But keeps the two bundles apart.

Less susceptible to rabbit teeth than the white tubing. Also provides a degree of protection against said teeth too. But not for long.

Can't comment on the sonics but chewed-through speaker cable sounds worse than speaker cable which has been saved by said tubing...
