I remember hearing the news of it on the Nine O'clock News [BBC One] after combining corn - for some strange reason my brother, father, and I were at our Uncle D++++'s house [next door farm] having a cup of tea in front of the tele...
It was hardly expected. His decline into an early deasth was a shock given his previous fame...
We played an hour of Elvis at work today in mark of the event, though I did not give this reason for putting it on in place of the more usual Muse, Marilyn Manson, or other things I am not quite on the same wavelength as. Elvis's range of songs and styles is rather wide, if you actually listen to them...

You definitely had to be there at the time to appreciate the impact he had. Unfortunately I wasn't and my memories of him are mainly as a fat sweaty cabaret artiste who made some appalling movies.
For me the Beatles changed everything and had a far more fundamental impact on music and society than Elvis ever did. I love Suspicious Minds though.
