iTunes or Amazon? ECM mega dowmload

Posted by: fred simon on 28 October 2008

Does anyone have a sense of which download format sounds better (given the inherent limitations of any file compression), iTunes or Amazon?

Amazon uses a variable bit rate depending on the complexity of the sound source, aiming for an average of 256kbps. iTunes proprietary AAC files are 128kbps. So are the Amazon files automatically better sounding?

I'm not crazy about compressed audio (although it sure sounds better than most of the cassette tapes we used to listen to), but ECM is offering an amazing deal: 12 discs worth, 123 tracks, $18 on Amazon or $20 on iTunes. Lots of music I would not likely buy in complete album format, but would like to have samples of.

Thanks in advance for any info on this.

All best,
Fred

For $38, give them both a whirl and let us know what you think. (I love spending other peoples' money Big Grin))

Hi Fred - can't find the offer you're referring to. Do you have a link?

It's Amazon.com in the USA. Try this link:

But now I can't seem to find it on iTunes, so I guess my decision has been made for me!

Actually, buying the same individual track from both sellers isn't a bad idea ... a couple of bucks and I'd be able to hear for myself.

Unfortunately, the offer seems to have been rescinded on iTunes, so I'll go for Amazon for the compilation.

But not a bad idea to check out some time.

All best,
Fred

Personally I would buy the one with least obtrusive copy protection ....

Yes, amazon is DRM free which wins every time! - and in theory 256kbps is exponentially better in consideration of file size.

However, Apples AAC technology is commendably better than an end user ripping their compact disc collection on a computer at home in MP3 128kbps. But why anyone in this day and age would rip at 128kbps themselves is a mystery to me! Confused
