NAP 135 Fans

Posted by: JosephR on 21 September 2001

I have a pair of 135s ... At loud volumes, the fan starts up, but usually just the left channel.
Is this normal that only 1 unit's fans start up while the other doesn't ? Or must they always start up together ?

TIA

Perhaps your left channel amp doesn't get as much air circulation around it as the right channel. In general, though, I would expect them to start up "approximately" at the same time. (They aren't synchronized by anything other than the music.)

There's a good chance that they need servicing.

You didnt mention how your 135's are positioned. I used to find that when I had them in close proximity one above the other, the upper one's fan would run more and earlier than the lower ...presumably caused by the rising heat from the lower one.

Since I have separated them out more with a good air gap between shelves this seems not to happen any more.

You could try swapping the amps around and see what happens then... using your current left amp for the right.

The load of your speakers has a significant effect on your 135 fans too.. when I was running Isobariks on them the fans worked much harder than they do with my current NBLs.

Mike mentioned a service... I recently had my amps serviced and the fans replaced. They run much quieter than the original ones.

Thanks, guys. There are sufficient air gaps, approx. 5-6 inches between each component (yes, the upper one is the one whose fan starts up often).

I guess servicing is needed, as I just noticed that even at 9 o'clock, the fan on the upper one starts when heavy metal is played. No bad effects on the sound, though, and since it's heavy metal I don't hear the fans ... Originally, I thought it was just at high volumes, 3 o'clock for Holly Cole's "Jersey Girl" and Metallica's "Enter Sandman". Funny thing about the other one is that the fan doesn't even start at high volumes !

Searched and found some posts on the 135's fans ... looks like just an adjustment needed, hopefully ...

Possibly. Alternatively, it may just be a heavy metal fan. smile
