CD5i failed to play some CDs
Posted by: HN on 10 January 2004
I got my CD5i today, and I found some CDs doesn't work. My dealer said that they will contact NAIM USA tomorrow, but I want to know whether others have the same problem.
1 YES, Close to the Edge, 2003 USA Elektra/Rhino R2 73790
2 YES, Going for the One, 2003 USA Elektra/Rhino R2 73793
3 YES, Relayer, 2003 USA Elektra/Rhino R2 73792
other titles from the same series I have - Fragile, tales from topographic oceans are OK. 1 & 2 almost all time failed to play (I succeed only once), on both dealer's demo CD5i & my one. The dealer have their own copy of disk 1 and it also failed (so I think something wrong with this conbination - not the CD itself). 3 was tested only my CD5i, and sometimes played. These CDs can be played other CDPs - include CD5, CDX2, etc. These titles are not (as far as I know) CCCDs.
If you have both CD5i and these titles, please try and let me know the results. Thanks.

Nana are aware of the software fix if it is the problem we think. Sorry for the hassle we are on it!!

HN, many of my yes ones exhibit the same problem, and as usual its the cds not the player.
If you look towards the centre of the CD, it dips in slightly, all warner CDs of this era have it.
I place small peices of sticky tape where the rubbers of my puck impact the cd for better grip and there were no more problems.
Although I am aware the new 5i has a different puck so YMMV.
Good luck

Paul,
Since all of the CD5i players currently in the US are defective and have to be sent back to NANA for a software fix, do you think they'll be able to handle the workload of having a large volume of these new units in for repair all at once? Do you think they'll be able to very quickly fix the defect and send the units back out to the customers in a timely manner? Please let us know how Naim intends to handle this crisis.

Hello,
I bought a cd5i yesterday (i believe the same dealer HN uses) but have not found any cds that do not play. What is the software upgrade? I do not really want to send a cdp that I just bought in for service. Paul can you please explain exactly what the problem with the software is as well as what route to take regarding service.

No PANIC, We found that some cd's and cdr's may have a playablity issue. The pic in the player is fully updateable, this can be done easily by the dealer via the 232 port or via Nana.
We have found the reason and the fix is being implemented, sorry for the hassle. It is a new transport mech in the cd5i and we have only just discovered this issue.
Anyone who has a playability issue with a 5i should contact the dealer who sold the unit, we know that there are very few.

Paul,
Just to clarify this matter, have you found that some cds and cdrs MAY have a playability issue, or have you found that some cds and cdrs DO have a playability issue? Say I have not yet experienced a playability issue with my 5i, don't you think that it would be better to just go ahead and get the repair done now instead of waiting around to discover the problem sometime in the future? You say that the fix is being implimented, so does this mean that Monday morning NANA will be equipped and ready to perform the repair? Since it is a simple software upgrade, does this mean that NANA will have the ability to perform this task promptly and send my unit back to me the day after they recieve it? Please let us know.

Attention Naim:
Given the huge number of forum members who are fans of "classic rock", be sure to have pre-launch test scripts covering all CD's within this genre before introducing your next CDP.

Maybe the cd5i just has good taste. It seems to like my jazz collection quite well. In fact, it hums right along with Sonny Rollin's tenor playing. Just kidding. Anybody who has those yes cds (I do not, but took a look at one when I was at the Naim dealer) take a close look at the back. Rhino claims that this new issue is "remastered" and "expanded". I think we all know what remastering is, but what does "expanded" mean? Odd, damn odd.

No, I agree.
Expanded usually means there's some sort of "bonus" media like an MP3 or WMA track, a Quicktime video, or the like (I think).

Gurn,
We have just installed the Naim CD5i software updater at NANA and we are ready to update players. (in fact we have done a few machines locally already and it's quick and effective). As Paul says contact your dealer, and we're ready when you are.
HN it sounds like I'll be hearing from your dealer shortly, and we'll get your player sorted out too.
Regards

Chris,
Thanks. Yes, they will contact NANA on Monday.
Gavagai, if your dealer is Pine/Van Ness, you are right. Were you in a shop around 3:00 pm ?

Hn,
Yes that was me. I ended up walking out with the cd5i. I really like the music coming out of my speakers, but I 'm not sure I really want to send the player back and wait for the service. Still thinking about it. I hope you are enjoying as well.

Whit's goin' oan here?,the fabled NAIM soak tests and listening room seems to have missed this "googly".
is it the CD5I or the pesky cd's at fault?.
my humble LINN cd player(IKEMI),doesn't have such Catholic tases/habits and plays a wide variety of cd's with it's usual aplomb.

I throw all kinds of discs at the players, freebies, CD-R's, SACD's, CD's and as I say, I've never had a problem.
I can't understand, the CD5i glitch aside, which Naim have acknowledged, why there appears to be a number of people experiencing non-playing CD's.
Strange..............
Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......
