TRIANGLE, INTROs or ALLAEs for CD5/112/150?
Posted by: Arnaud on 17 September 2003
My current system is CD5/112/150 with Triangle Loudspeakers. I find this fine with Chord Odyssey cables, but too "hard" (harsh?) with NACA 5, and also lacking of "luminosity", though the sound is more engaging...
1) Has anybody the same kind of combination, and what's your feeling about it?
2) If I were to switch to Naim Loudspeakers, I understand Allaes are mutch better than Intros, but would my 112/150 be powerfull enough to drive them?
Thanks for your help.

The 150 can drive Allaes quite happily. The Allae is not a difficult speaker to drive.

Frank.

IMHO, Triangle and Naim are not a proper match. Triangle speakers will never do PRaT, pointe finale! Using Naim hardware with Triangle speakers is sort of a clash of ideals. They are both fine products, but they are just not made for each other. If you like the sound of Triangle, there are more appropriate choices of electronics which will bring out their best virtues. If you value PRaT, then there are better loudspeaker choices to go with your Naim kit such as Epos, Royd, Neat, and of course Naim. If you keep them together, then you will spend eternity messing with cables and tweaks and this and that in order to find a balance. It;s fine if you have the time and patience. Kind of like putting the wrong size tyres on a car. It will still get you to the pub, but the gear ratios will all be changed and the speedo will not be correct.

I have Triangle speakers for use with my valve amp and I've also tried them with Naim amps. I'd agree that they don't work well together and the overall result is a fairly harsh sound.

Hi Arnaud
I have just spent time with my local Naim dealer (Loud & Clear - Glasgow) and listened to the CD5/112/150/ALLAE combination with a view to purchase. The entire system worked better with NACA5 cable than with Chord - it was too metallic with the latter and the former really brought the PRaT together.
But one word of caution - whilst they do drive easily enough - the CD5 will, in my opinion, need a HiCap (don't even consider the Flatcap)to balance everything. When I listened to this combination it was SIGNIFICANTLY better and then got me thinking about a CDX2 as this would not be too far away financially...........
Best advice, as always, is to listen for yourself and make your own judgement. The ALLAE's will only get better if you feed them with better information - we all know that !!

Hmm,
My friends bought the cheapest Triangles to go with the $250 Sony cd/dvd/sacd and an HK receiver from the 80s. Man, these speakers are fantastic for the money. I don't miss my system at all when I'm at their place.
They don't have much bass, but close to the wall they do ok, and the tweeter on these is fantastic.
I can't say if they are harsh with Naim--they might well be. But I certainly wouldn't attack them on pace grounds.

Hi!
I know some people will not agree with this:
I had NAIT5 with B&W CDM1SE but needed a larger speaker after moving to a bigger flat. After deciding to give the allae a chance (compared it with Totem Hawk & Forest) I demo´d the allae with Nait5, 112/150 as well as 202/200 to see if my NAIT5 was at least OK with the allae, or if I needed to upgrade my amp. as well. I was surprised to find the NAIT5 to be quite OK with the allae, and are now happely feeding my new allaes with it. I will most certainly upgrade amp as source in the future (202/200 or 282/? + CDX2) but for now I´m happy. And it´s good to know that I wont need to change speakers in a while...
The allae is (at least in my flat) very position dependent, especially when it comes to the distance between the wall and the speaker. After moving it back and forth I now get exectly the bass I want to balance mid and high.
So, to answer your question I think that 112/150 will be fine driving your allaes as even a NAIT does quite a good job. There is always more and better further up the Naim ladder, but I think you will be surprised if you bring a pair home and test it with your 112/150.

Thank you for your inputs. The real problem now is for me to find a dealer in France which has Allae's in demo.
If anyone living in France can help me on that matter, it will be fine.

Could you explain more precisely what's wrong between Triangle and Naim?
Triangle speakers are meant to be very fast and dynamic: doesn't it favour what people call PRaT?

Hi Arnaud,
Synthese near Strasbourg can do a proper demo of intros vs allaes with cd5/112/150.
Far from Paris but nice place to visit during a week end (don't forget to e bay the Triangle before you go there).
