By hook or by crook

Meaning

By any means possible - fair or foul.

Origin

It is sometimes suggested that this derives from a custom in mediaeval England of allowing peasants to take any deadwood from the royal forest that they could reach with a shepherd's crook or a reaper's billhook. That's just one of the many suggested derivations. Another commonly repeated suggestion is that it comes from Hook Head and nearby village of Crook, in Waterford, Ireland. Those stories, nor any of the others that I won't bore you with, have any evidence to support them - apart from some reference to hooks and crooks.

The earliest references date back to the 14th century - the first known being in Old English, from John Wyclif, 1380. None of the early citations make any reference to wood gathering, which we might expect them to if that really were the origin.

Must have missed that one sorry Mark.

We have tickets for the 10/10/07 at Wembley, I hope it sounds better than the 30R tour.

In what way Howard? I enjoyed the gig at Manchester.

Wembley sound was really muddled,Geddy's bass lines were just a very loud blur.If this one is not any better a new venue will be required which obviously involves even more travelling.

I had a similar experience at a concert at Birmingham NEC probably 10 years ago. I remember the sound being so bad that I complained at the ticket office half way through the concert and they gave me my money back! They obviously new how bad it was themselves.

It never rains...

but it pours! What's with all these rock tour dates being announced so close together? Recently we've had Heaven and Hell (Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio on vocals), Metallica, Alice Cooper/Motorhead/Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Deep Purple/Styx/Thin Lizzy etc.

I'm booked for: (Andy Powell's) Wishbone Ash, Gary Moore, Saxon, & Heaven and Hell. I can't afford to spring for Rush tickets (especially at £39-45 each). Saw them both nights at Wembley on the R30 tour anyhow.

I envy anyone going, it'll be a treat!

Best regards,
Mole Man
