Valuation of Rolling Stones LP for insurance purposes?

Posted by: MichaelC on 14 February 2003

Hi - Can anyone help?

I am having to supply an inventory (with valuation) for home contents purposes. I have a three lp set of The Rolling Stones entitled "American Tour '81". I have looked on AMG but it is not listed. The labels are blank with no inscription whatsoever so I guess it is a bootleg. Can anyone shed any light on this and hazard a guess at value? I should add that the quality of the recording is very good and the vinyl is near mint.

Thanks

What label is it on and what is the catalog number?

There is neither label nor catalog number! The centre lables are coloured yellow, red and white and have absolutely nothing on them! Not being a Rolling Stones enthusiast it is bit of a mystery to me.

Michael,
This certainly doesn't appear to be catalogued anywhere as an official release, so its likely to be a bootleg. The Stones certainly did do a major US tour between July and December of 81 and I've found references to a bootleg, 3 disc LP possibly recorded live at Hampton Colloseum, Hampton VA., in mid December. I have no real idea of value. If you ever want to get rid of it though let me know, I wouldn't mind acquiring it for my own collection.

Wasn't this bootlegged from a US pay per view airing of the concert???

I don't know - I guess its possible! the origins are a bit obscure but if you do a bit of research on the web using Google you'll find some references to this bootleg. What does it sound like - does it sound as though it was taken off-air or live? I suppose its hard to tell!

David

Thanks for that - I'll do a little bit of searching on Google to see if I can find out more.

Not being a Rolling Stones fan I've only ever played a couple of sides and that was a long time ago. From memory the recording was pretty good - I may just give it a spin again and let you know what I think.

Thanks

Looks like £60.

Thats it - £60 looks good enough for insurance purposes.

That will be £120 for insurance purposes. Replacement costs are always higher as prices go up when you need to purchase. Any specialist dealer will increase the price when they know its an insurance job.

Go in high and expect the Insurance company to knock you down, but make sure you don't loose out.

I have searched on Google and it almost certainly appears to be Hampton. I have also found reference to this being possibly a recording taken off-air.

I have also found a couple of boxed sets on offer at £50 & £60 respectively.

Thanks to you all for your help - it was interesting finding out the history. Mind you it still does not make me a big 'Stones fan!!!
