detailed info on the nait 5i
Posted by: scottt on 07 December 2003
I am interested in knowing about the changes
made from a nait 5 to a 5i. Don't seem to
see anything other than a power increase
from 30w to 50w...how was this achieved,
how do the 2 units differ, and most important,
sonically, what has been gained...what has
been traded off? Thanks..and if you know of
an e. reference...then just direct me to it.

Yes
Lets please have some solid information.
1. Does it sound better than the Nait 5 or just different?
2. Is it better than a Nait 5 powered by a flatcap 2 or hicap?
3. Do all of the four inputs have both a DIN or phono option? Or is it a case of two DIN and two phono which can be configured to your chosen input?
4. Can a headline and stageline still be used with the 5i if they are powered by say a flatcap 2?
5. Now that the 5i has been designed to be used with a wide range of speaker cables does this mean that NAC A5 is no longer as critical to acheiving a good balanced sound? Does this mean that high capacitance cables such as Kimber 8TC can now effectively be used?
6. Does the change to a passive preamp section mean that transparency and detail will be enhanced at the expense of dynamics, PRAT e.t.c.
7. Is the case construction the same as the original 5 series?
8. Is the transformer the same as in the 150 power amp or is it another design i.e. cheaper?
Thanks

Could perhaps the moderators please answer some of my questions and then we can all leave you alone in peace!

Freckles,
If you want to make sure the mods see your post immediately, you can use the snitch switch (the little triangle at the right bottom corner of your post). I'm not sure they'll love you for it, though.
A more acceptable means of getting a fast answer would be calling or mailing Naim directly.
Ultimately, I suspect, Naim will tell you to book a dem with your dealer once the amp is out there, and not speculate which tech feature is responsible for which aspect of the sound.
And if, instead of trying to have others work for you, you'd invest a little time in researching the 5i on this forum, you'd find most of your questions answered.

That's just the problem Markus, not many of my questions have been answered on this forum. Surely someone must know whether the Nait 5i has four din and four phono inputs or two din and two phono e.t.c. My dealer doesn't have a 5i yet, he can't give me this simple information. There been talk of the 5i series for months now and yet all that's been produced is a simple flyer for the products that doesn't address the issues. I've already asked on this forum when a downloadable manual will be available but I didn't get a response. So can somebody please give us some answers. Thank you.

Much has already been posted about the Nait 5i and further information can be found on our main site here: http://www.naim-audio.com/products/nait5i.html
The Nait 5i has both DINs or RCA Phonos available for the CD and Aux/Tuner inputs and the others are just on RCA phonos.
A Stageline can be used so long as it is powered from a dedicated power supply. As the Tape loop is on RCAs, the Haedline as standard cannot be used - your dealer will probably be happy to solder on some phonos for any Nait 5i owners needing to use a Headline.
A5 is still recommended for optimum performance but the 5i has been designed to be more tolerant of some less expensive types of cable. As always, your dealer can advise on options if A5 is out of your price range.
The case construction is a little bit different to that of the previous Nait 5 but the overall look and materials are the same.
The transformer has been specifically chosen for the Nait 5i and isn't shared by the NAP150.
As for sound comparisons with the outgoing Nait 5, much has been said and speculated on this previously on the forum. My advice would be that when the time comes to dem the Nait 5i, to listen for yourselves and make your own judgement. Most of all enjoy yourselves.

Thanks very much for your reply Richard. I can now sleep easily at night with my new found knowledge and as promised I will now leave you in peace!

Quoting from Naim's website:
The most powerful and best sounding Nait ever.
End of discussion.
Can't wait to hear one!
Cheers, Betton

Does any one know if the remote for the CD 5i is compatable with the Nait 5?

The i-com uses the same RC5 codes as the rest of our equipment so will work without a problem with our preamps and CD players. Existing Narcoms can also be used with the 5i kit.
Note that when using the i-com with other preamps in our range, no adjustment of balance is possible and mute cannot be selected.
