Best place to sell old 78's?

Posted by: Sicey on 23 April 2008

I inherited a load of my late Uncle's 78's collection, TBH I don't have a record player at the moment and I don't actually like the music so thought it would be best to flog them to people that appreciate them.
Is Ebay the best place or would you recommend somewhere else to sell them?

Regards,

John

Sad truth is, no-one seems to want them any more. You could take them to the Oxfam shop... if they don't want them either you should either keep or chuck.

Mid-1950s EMI/Decca vinyl is another matter.

There isn't a great call for old 78s - but some could be worth something if the titles are sought after - e.g. Robert Johnson. I'm not sure why this is, but record collecting is strange.

Some superb classical recordings fetch next to nothing, while some dreary pop ditty can be worth a fortune. In this case the dreariness is not my opinion, but generally accepted by Record Collectors: it is the rarity rather than quality that counts.

I guess there are more copies of great works than mediocre ones; the mediocre ones are rarer and fetch more money.

Why not get a Technics SL1200 with 78 capability and play the records yourself - you may find some pleasant surprises - really like Gracie Fields' records.

PS In the case of Robert Johnson they are both rare and superb - the exception to prove the rule.
