Calling electric guitar players

Posted by: Lightkeeper on 28 May 2006

Hi,

did anyone know something about Crate VC5310 tube amp for electric guitar? Is it a good buy if it's equipped with new tubes?
Some says that Mark Knopfler is using this amp, so...

What do you think?
BTW, it will be used with Les Paul.

Thanks,
Oz Smile

Your Les Paul deserves a really good amp.
Never been too impressed with Crate's offerings, but I'm a bass player so take it for what that's worth.
Spring for a Mesa Boogie. Or, for a good VFM check out the Carvin offerings.
I believe all the Crate stuff is made in China, attention to overall quality may not be up to the guitar.
If Mark is using the amp that probably means that they've stuffed one with money so he'll say he uses it... Nothing against Mark but that's the way it usually works.

I recently picked up a fender hot rod deluxe.

Lovely rich tone with two overdrive options for a really grunty sound. 40watts is absolutely loads of power. Cool retro looks - I love it. Just an idea!

I like the new Peavey Valve Kings; great value.

I second the recommendation! The deluxe is an AWESOME amp! (The tone is totally addictive.) Cool

Yeah I haven't really enjoyed Crate amps.

Les Pauls tend to make just about any amp sound good but classic sounds are had from Marshalls (Slash, Eric Clapton etc), Fenders, Oranges (Oasis - gasp!) and Mesa Boogies. Also if you want rare fare try a Matchless - I hear they are superb.

Back when I used to play for a living I used a Matchless DC-30. I went through amps like crazy until I bought that one. The sound I had been hearing in my head my whole life. Sold it a couple of years ago and was told it is now on the road with Sheryl Crow.

These days I don't gig nearly as much but record a lot. I have been using a Dr. Z Carmen Ghia and really like it. Mike Zaike is a former Matchless employee, I believe. Great sounding amps, most of the Matchless mojo at a fraction of the cost.
