Sensible Price for Speakers

Posted by: Harris V on 27 November 2003

Given a 202/200 (which I will soon have) combo what price range of speakers should I be looking at? I am utterly confused by two dealers who have suggested everything from £900 to £3000. Surely there can't be such a wide range - I can't possibly listen to them all!! It's all very well them saying you need to find something that suits but when there are 100s of speakers to choose from I'll be too old to hear the difference at this rate.

You don't need to upgrade your speakers at the moment as the Moitor Audio 3s will do for now. Actually they will sound much better with the new amps. I would be looking at updating either the CD or TT at this stage.

£900 - £3000 is the right bracket! Many would say that the £3000 end is ridiculously high and doesn't follow source first principles. This is true, but speaker choice is so very personal, that the only one you would be entirely happy with could be the £3000 model.

A dealer will offer you options that he can sell you that work well in the context of the system. He would be doing you a disservice if he didn't at least offer you the option if he knew it worked well. After all, Wilson benesch ARCs (£2600-ish) suit the 202/200 combo very well indeed.

Oh - and there's nothing sensible about hifi prices - you know that!

Frank.

Hi Harris

If you want an 'all Naim' system and funds are tight; don't overlook the Intro 2's - I think they're very under-rated.

Or; wait for the new 'Arriva' which will allegedly be available 'in the new year'. Naim are aiming for a retail price of £995.

syd - Yes you're right but my speakers have certain characteristics that overwhelm the music at the moment and I need to get them sorted and matched to my room.

Frank - OK, I admit, hifi prices are not exactly sensible but I've never shopped for speakers in this price bracket before and I'm having a hard time taking it in. I have always thought a more expensive speaker will reveal more detail to the extent that it shows up inadequacies elsewhere. Shouldn't even different makes of speakers at a given price point do this? PS - Is that price for the ARCS including stands?

On a less confusing note I listened to a pair of Allaes and was much more impressed than I was with Credos. However I've also been convinced to revisit the B&W range with their new 700s and wait for some new Ruarks next year. That narrows it down to 74 models to go then.
