ProAc 2.5 in Small Room

Posted by: AlanK on 11 October 2003

Hello Everybody,

I'm considering getting the ProAc 2.5 Speaker for my system. However, since my room size is only 12 feet x 14 feet (3.66 m x 4.27 m), I wonder if the room might be too small for the speaker? Does anyone uses ProAc 2.5 with Naim System in a room similar to mine? I would like to hear from you.

I'm also interested to know if the new ProAc D25 (with the port at the base of the cabinet) might work better in a smaller room? I have not heard D25 yet. Does anyone has a chance to hear D25. Any difference comparing to the Response 2.5?

Thank you and have a great day!

I use Proac Response 3.5`s is a room no bigger than yours. Of course there are other important factors...shape, type of construction of walls/floor, amount of furnishing, intended position of speakers etc.

My speakers work very well

Alan--

I had ProAc 2.5s for something like 3 years and loved them. Highly musical, terrific sounding.

It is always hard to say if a given speaker will work in a given room without trying it. As Laurie notes, sometimes speakers that you wouldn't think would work in a given room work beautifully.

With 2.5s, I think two things to think about are how much room you can allow behind them and amplifier grip. Mine were out about 4 feet from the back wall--closer and they got boomy and farther out they started to sound thin. The other factor is amplifier grip--I used a 250, which is probably the smallest amp that can really grip them well. I tried a 180 and it just didn't cut it. I heard them briefly off a 52/500 combo and they were awesome--I think I liked them even more than the Response 5.

And, as always, source matters. The better the source and preamp, the better. I think the only real downside to the 2.5 is that you probably need something like an 82/Hicap/250 to begin hearing how good they can be.

Good luck!

I have the response 1.5 in a 4,60 x 3,50 m, with nac72-hicap-140-cdi and work well but i think a 250 can do much better.
A friend: 2.5. in a 5,50 x 4,00 m and has same boom problem with ARC amp. resolved with good solid state (krell ksa50).
New D range may have less problem with placement.
i hope this help

Hi Alan,
I drive my 2.5 with 102/Hicap,NAPSC,250 and think they are great loudspeakers. My room size is about 25 m2. My experience is that you really need to try different positions (see Bob's statement). I also think that ProAc's are loudspeakers that need some space around them, but with a good amplification they should give you very good results (even in smaller rooms). Also try with different furniture positions, carpets, curtains and the delivered damper might also be useful.

Be patient and you'll love them.

Cheers

To Bob,

So you do think that the 2.5 work perfectly with a 252?

Reto--

I haven't heard the 2.5 with a 252, but I would be very surprised if such a system weren't fabulous. Having heard 2.5s with a 52/250 and 52/500 I would be confident a 252 would be great.

Hello All,

Thanks very much for all your helpful suggestions! I was initially considering 1SC or D15, but got really hooked on 2.5 when I heard the demo! I guess I would wait for another month or so until somebody has a chance to review the new D25 in comparison to the Response 2.5, then make a decision on which one to get.

Cheers,

Hi Alan,

Please let us know about your conclusion!

I'm curious how much better the newer version of 2.5 is...

have a good day!

I'm using Proac 2.5's in a room about 20' x 12'.
I was using 52/135 and now 552/135 (hugely increased 'grip').

In my room they need to be 3-4 feet from the back wall and in space. I have them sited on Mana soundbases with Nordost Titanium points in place of spikes, between speaker and Mana. There are spikes between Mana and the concrete floor. The result is superb.

Suggest in your case you should 'suck it and see'.
