Chilled J***

Posted by: Martin C on 24 September 2002

Hi there,
(especially to the chill-out fan like Darryl)

If you like chill-out music, you haven't bought a lot of individual bands album, with the likes of Zero7, Fila Brazilia, Royksopp, Nitin Sawhney, St Germain & Groove Armada ...etc. It is a great compilation to get. Even though I buy a lots of chill-out albums, I still get this double CDs. It includes some classic jazz artists with a twist (remixes), i.e. Nina Simone, Randy Crawford & Courtney Pine.

Come on guys & you won't regret it.

cheers

This was a recent impulse buy which went straight back to the shop after one listen. Despite being a tight-fisted northerner, I normally hang on to the duff buys that we all occasionally make but I couldn't bare to have this in the house wink

If I was looking for a compilation with the likes of Royksopp, Zero 7, Groove Armada, etc. on there are millions to choose from that don't have the same kind of fller that this has.

Me, I was expecting it to have some jazz on it but there you go

Sorry to get so animated about this CD. Normally I'm fairly relaxed about this sort of thing but this one just caught my imagination!

Regards,
Ed

then cut to the chase and get a copy of "In a Silent Way" by Miles Davis. This is, after all, the man that invented "cool" for music (c.f. "Birth of the Cool"). It's nothing like Zero 7 etc., but there again you'd be stretching things a bit to label them as jazz.

Hi Ed/Pete,

To be honest I liked the so called Nu Jazz a few years ago, before got into classic Jazz, like Miles Davies, Herbie Hancock ... etc. I bought so many Miles Davis CDs. Perhaps some of the traditional Jazz fans can't accept the new form of music. I can see where this come from. It is up to the individual of course.

I just thought this Chilled jazz compilation is great to combined both, I got so many chill out albums & compilations. I thought It's great to share with the others, it is obvious that it's not others' cup of tea. Well, happy listening, not matter what kind of music you listening to.

By the way, any of you know which Quincy Jones' CD should I get, I am after the song 'Summer in the city' whic was sampled by Nightmares on Wax on 'Les Nuits', great song!

cheers

Martin,
"Nu Jazz" as a title always struck me as a bit of an oddity, as to my mind the music was always funk, fusion, soul, the dreaded "R&B" (the new definition) or even a bit of old school jazz.

What irritated me about this CD (and this is where I start to sound like a jazz snob) was dressing stuff up as jazz when it patently wasn't. In hindsight there was some good stuff on there which I've already got but the rest was utter kak!

Anyway, Quincy Jones, a superb composer/musician who has let himself down by acting as producer to those less able. I've never wanted to delve into any of his own LPs/CDs but Summer in the City was on one of those "Sampled" compilations (now I'm at it!).

Hi Ed,

Thanks, I foudn out about 'Sampled' last week, I think it's on vol.3, will try to get hold a copy.
Since you have a copy, what about the other tracks, are they good. There are some original songs were sampled by Groove Armada and other dance acts.

Is it a DJ mix album, mix together, or just individual cut? I prefer the later.

I pick up a bargain at HMV last weekend, it's called PRINT (German label), 2CDs, with a lot of good tracks, even though some of the them, I have already have. Others tracks which I was not familar with, are surprising good. Only a fiver.
(Orange cover)

These CD has been remastered, with the ambience effect on surround Hi-Fi as it claims at the back.
