Unitiserve and wireless contorl

Posted by: PBenny1066 on 25 November 2010

Am seriously considering a Unitiserve to plug into my Supernait, but am a bit concerned that the only way of connecting it to the network is via ethernet cable. In my case the router is in another room and I have intention of running 60 ft. of cable.

I want to be able to use iPhone app to control the uniti, so my question is, is there any way of connecting the Unitiserve wirelessly to the network ?

I don't want to stream music wirelessly or anything like like that, just be able to connect unitiserve to the network so that it can grab metadata from the internet and so that I can control it using iphone.

Am really surprised and disappointed that it isnt already wireless enabled for these purposes.

Cheers, Paul

Problem is not with the UnitiServe but your Supernait since it has no Wifi. You could go UnitQute to SuperNait and stream across your wireless network from your UnitiServe.

I think I have the opposite problem - I like to connect directly to my Uniti from my Mac - maybe the SuperNait would have been a better buy.

Do you need the Serve? Why not connect via laptop into SN via USB convertor and stream that way?

Tog, thanks for speedy response. I already have a macmini + hiface plugged into the S/N, using iTunes, controlled by iphone app.

But now I am mulling over replacing the macmini set up with a Unitiserve into the S/N. For reasons of sound quality (i will demo it first to prove or disprove this), and because to me living rooms and computers (even macs !) don't mix well.

But before I go further I am trying to find out if there is a simple way to connect Unitiserve to the network wirelessly, just to be able to control it using iphone interface.

You can connect a UnitiServe (or other wired only Ethernet device) to a wireless network using a Wireless bridge device. Apple's Airport Express does this or devices from Netgear, LinkSys, D-Link etc.

I had the same issue so I used a Netgear Powerline connected to my UnitiServe. It's only purpose is to obtain the metadata info and provide the ability to run the ipod application, n-Serve. It works great! Cost roughly $100 USD. Plug it in and it works!

Good one. Not using it for music streaming so no issue there. No noise interference at all? I would assume that would negate it getting any other files from other sources though.

I don't hear any difference when connected or when not connected, playing the same file in uServe hdd. I also use this to create backups of my nServe files to my NAS.

Wouldn't that be $200, since you need two devices to make a network ?

Two units in the box, $100.

Eloise,

many many thanks ! I happen to have a spare Airport Express, which I have now connected and the Unitiserve joined joined the network straight away. Honestly didn't realise an AE could do this. Problem solved. Aren't these forums useful !

Run the cable 60 foot is nothing, the tools for crimping up ethernet are pennies and the end result will be far better than ethernet over power or wireless.

Its silly spending 2 grand on a server and not going the final run.

How does the Unitiserve compare to your Mac?

Huw,

in straight A-B comparisons into the S/N, the Unitiserve comes out on top, but what suprised me is how good the mac min + Hiface is, in my combination at least, and of course to my ears. I can only report what i hear. Another reviewer here summed it up nicely by saying that the Mac + itunes "adds" something to the music. Not in a positive way - a bit of colouration in the bass, and with more complex music a loss of coherence. A bit edgy at the top end too, on occasions.

But the differences were, IMHO, small. Value for money ? Not sure, but I guess its the law of diminishing returns. I'll probably end up getting one, it just felt more coherent and live.

Hope this helps....Paul

please educate me - if I use a wireless connection to internet only for the purpose of controlling the Unitierve, how could this affect sound quality ?

Thanks Paul.

I'm using an optical connection at the moment and I don't think the Mac is as good as the USB port. Will the Hi-face make a bigger improvement than say swaping to an unitiserve for less outlay?

may have to look at the NDX if the jump in SQ is not high enough in to my nDac.

You were asking about connecting a unitiserve wirelessly. I answered. The iphone has nothing to do with it.

Huw,

unfortunately cant comment on mac mini using optical, I went straight for the hiface option on the basis of what I heard and read from others.

As I mentioned, the mac + hiface, using plain itunes gets very close to the unitiserve indeed, in my system at least. Perhaps into a nDAC and a higher end system it would be different, i don't know.
