Well here it is then, started...

A place for discussion of all things Rugby, whether club, national or international...
The next joy we have to look forward to is the Rugby World Cup. (I imagine it is at this point some of the NZ forum members will join in...)
Any comments, chaps? Or still a bit too early?

I think that's what the procedure around 'citing' players is all about, Ali. Besides, if the TMO was to contact the ref on the occurrance of every conceivable infringement of the laws during a match, imagine what that will do to continuity, and hence the spectacle - it would be a right turn-off!
Also, I second the comments about O'Driscoll's graceless post-match interview following Ireland's ignominious exit. Argentina not only came to play, they played brilliantly and IMO will take some stopping. They have always had a pack to stand with the best of them but now they have a clever and skillful half-pack partnership as well. I take them to reach the semi-finals at least on the strength of yesterday's performance.

And another draw for one of my teams! Wasps this time. 24 all away to Worcester.
Hopefully England lose against Tonga so that we can have the World Cup players back sooner rather than later!
And mine won againLeicester 26 Bath 16 and currently lying second - only by virtue of points difference to present leaders Quins (nice shirts, I always thought).

Glad you're sticking with the Rugby thread FF!!
It'll be interesting to see how things change (if at all) when players get back from RWC duties.
I noticed that Tigers and Wasps each had 5 players in the squad for the Tonga match. As part of the ongoing curiosity which is England squad selection, I still don't quite understand how the English team with the highest number of points in the regular season of the GPrem ends up with no representation at all in the national side...
Anyway, roll on Saturday ... for all sorts of reasons.

England team for AUS v ENG
Captain: Phil VickeryPARIS, 3 October - England head coach Brian Ashton on Wednesday announced his team to play Australia in the IRB Rugby World Cup quarter-final match at Stade Velodrome in Marseille on Saturday.
1 Andrew Sheridan
2 Mark Regan
3 Phil Vickery (c)
4 Simon Shaw
5 Ben Kay
6 Martin Corry
7 Lewis Moody
8 Nick Easter
9 Andy Gomarsall
10 Jonny Wilkinson
11 Josh Lewsey
12 Andy Farrell
13 Mathew Tait
14 Paul Sackey
15 Jason Robinson
Replacements:
16 George Chuter
17 Matt Stevens
18 Lawrence Dallaglio
19 Joe Worsley
20 Peter Richards
21 Olly Barkley
22 Dan Hipkiss
A relief, I'm afraid, to see nothing of Cueto on this list, and Barkley on the subs bench (for me, he's lucky getting that far!). Let's hope also that Sackey has learned to stop showing off and to touch down the ball nearer the posts than the corner flag. Is Rees injured? I thought his form was pretty good at the moment?
Shock horror, Dallaglio says in interview with ABC that England have got to play better if they're to beat Australia... Hell-o...
Wilkinson effectively sums up the problem with England so far in his interview with the Times on Monday, "Rugby World Cups emphasise the changing of eras of the game. If anyone tried to play 2003 rugby this time around, they would simply get outgunned."

Good for the Poms if Robbo's back, that hammy would have to be suspect though.
Could be interesting with Larkham and Staniforth both out.

Much as I dislike the Aussies and would like to see them crushed, I cannot understand why the carthorse Farrell is in the squad, let-alone in the starting line-up.

I had an interesting day today visting the Wasps training ground. The Wasps are a customer of ours and I went along to discuss some reciprocal business, potentially sponsorship or corporate hospitality packages.
I saw this in the trophy cabinet while I was there:
I also bumped in to Ian McGeechan in the canteen and saw Shaun Edwards, Mark Van Gisbergen and Dave Walder in there.
The I stuck my head in the gym and saw Tom Voyce, James Haskell, Tom Palmer, Eoin Reddan (just back from France) and others working out. Mark McMillan who injured his ankle against Tigers at the weekend also hobbled by with his cast on his lower leg.
Of course, being way too polite for my own good I didn't approach any of them for an autograph!
I might just have to make an excuse to go back when the world cup starts are back.

You'll be alright when you get half your squad back after tomorrow

What a game, the forwards were just too powerful and Australia forgot to turn up today. Complacency?

Well that was a much better perfromance. The scrum was awesome and they were dynamic at the breakdown. They thoroughly deserved the victory. Now they need to work on the action behind the pack as they lacked a bit of a cutting edge and should have put the game away much earlier. The kicking from hand was poor at times and the lightweight midfield worries me as Australia were blasting through the first tackles in that area. However, the defence mostly held firm and Jonny made the pressure kicks. He wasn't his usual self with the boot, though.
Well done England. Who'd have thought they'd make the semis?

Its seems also that they are improving with each match and we hope, Mark that your points will improving for the next game, confidence from winning can make that difference I feel.

Hot damn! Great result but I've been over at J.N.'s this afternoon with JonR listening to his superb new 500.
Naively thought I could record the match on Sky (J.N.'s not into sport) & avoid hearing the result.
Got in the car at 5.01 PM. Radio on the news...
Still, SWMBO doesn't know the result and, being Scottish, usually likes to see us get stuffed, so I will still derive a great deal of pleasure as we watch the final whistle being blown!

Normally I am a man of dignity and good sportsmanship. For the Australian Rugby team however, I will allow myself to make a special exception, especially as their media has been so generous and even handed towards us. SIOOMA losers!

I do believe we have met the Aussies four times at the World Cup and the only time they have won, was when Campo cheated in the final and deliberately knocked on a pass that would have resulted in a match winning try.
