Well here it is then, started... Big Grin

A place for discussion of all things Rugby, whether club, national or international...

The next joy we have to look forward to is the Rugby World Cup. (I imagine it is at this point some of the NZ forum members will join in...)

Any comments, chaps? Or still a bit too early?

Are you in a corporate box, Anthony?

Thanks for the invite, Anthony. I'd love to take you up on that depending, of course, on what my customers want to do as they will have the final say!

Regards

I've been invited by Tigers to consider having some tickets for Saturday's game against Leinster. Don't know if there's any point now in what can only be some kind of exhibition match. And my son still doesn't want to come (you try to bring 'em up right, etc etc etc) moan, moan, moan.

I know, James. I've tried to persuade my son that he should support QPR rather than 'gloryhunting'! Unfortunately, I'm fighting a losing battle. The only concessions I've managed to gain are that he will not support either Arsenal or Chelsea. Liverpool don't seem to hold much sway down here so that leaves only Man Utd.

I'm just hoping that now Rangers are the 'worlds richest club' we might start winning things and he can be both a glory hunter and the third generation QPR supporter in the family without conflict!

Some tickets around for Sat, I can't make it - pretty sure Tigers won't be fielding a real 1st team as you say - It does not matter anymore - I was trying to get to the Newcastle match which is sold out - at least we can concentrate on the premiership - GO TIGERS!

Ah, the 2nd February. Another false dawn for Welsh rugby?
It will be a great day out.
Sadly we will not be in the Car Park as one of our number can only walk with sticks, so it is a hydraulic lunch and then possibly the Scrum Bar afterwards.
Although I am a Tigers supporter, I dont think Tom Varndell is as good as some of the other wingers who have been selected. He is still rather precious.

From the few times i've watched varndell he tends to go missing when a winger needs to go looking for the ball and when you have to dog it out in the wet,Strettle on the other hand i've got plenty of time for him .
As for it being another false dawn for Wales i have to agree until we get a front five with some grunt and a hooker that can f""king throw the ball into the lineout to his own man it's another season of woe, hopefully Gatland can start to get to work on that and with Shaun Edwards coming on board we'll stop leaking soft tries and coupled with that the malign influence of Alfie out of the equation things can only get better.

Missed that one, then. What's he done wrong?

Not much on the pitch but one of the biggest clique formers off the field and too much lip for his own good and thats just for starters.

Watching Richard Hill tramping off for Saracens last night during their victory over Glasgow in the Heineken Cup reminded me of what a great player this man was.

Whilst Johnno, Wilko. Robinson and Dallaglio pick up most of the accolades it was Hill's unseen work in the loose that made the England back row so effective. His play was selfless, team oriented and non-posturing and he is one of the real heroes of English rugby history.

He looked broken and battered when he came off last night and it's a shame that the last few years of his career have been blighted with injury.

He was my favourite player in 2003 and it was him that kept Betsen quiet in that semi-final.

Well done to Sarries for being the first to qualify.

Not looking so good for Wasps at the moment.

Oh dear!
Posted on: 19 January 2008 by ryan_d
Sorry Mark, but you were well beaten. You just didn't keep control in the conditions. Pity the game didn't live up to last years either.

Ryan
Posted on: 19 January 2008 by Chillkram
Yes Ryan, you're right. They lost it up front today which doesn't happen too often.

Well, neither of last years finalists has made it through to the quarters. It just goes to show how open the competition is.

Wasps got 18 points in the 'group of death' and came third!

That bonus point that they allowed Munster to get at the Ricoh stadium has come back to haunt them as bonus points so often do.

Wasps out too. Oh well ... some small crumb of comfort there then Big Grin
Posted on: 20 January 2008 by antony d
Yes shame about wasps going out, but now like the Tigers can concentrate on GP - which should make the run in a lot more interesting. They have a lot of players on England duty however

Really pleased with the Tigers performance yesterday - lot's of power combined with a real sense of purpose - God alone only knows how this game would of been played if it meant either team going forward- I see Mr White has lost none of his, well lets say focus - I do feel the card should of been red though. Rabini is a man mountain played as if his life depended on it

Come on down Newcastle, and lets see what you have got

If you're out there FF, that was an enjoyable game, Glaws v Ulster. You'll want to be tighter defensively in the quarters though.

Couldn't agree with you more this man along with Martin Johnson were the key players in England's success no disrespect to Wilco and Dawson the armchair ride they got in most matches made them look even better than the the undoubtedly fine players that they were/are.
Richard Hills lack of fitness on the last Lions tour robbed the Lions of the best backrow forward in Britain at the time imo .

I hope Paul Sackey gets well soon. We dont need him hors de combat for the 6 Nations!

HIGHLANDFERS RUGBY SEASON TO START THIS WEEKEND

Coach’s Message
After a couple of months of hard work and training, the boys have enjoyed getting into some contact work and are raring to go this weekend against the Chiefs. Whilst the whole squad is likely to get a run at some stage on the weekend, each team member knows that playing positions are still up for grabs, and there will be intense competition internally to prove that they each deserve a place in the 22 when the round robin campaign begins. In speaking to each of the players individually, they are all aware of the importance of these games to work on our team structures and developing the game plans.

It's good to be in Invercargill this week, and to be able to spend time as a squad somewhere new. The team are training at Southland Boys High School and bunking down at the school hostel there. As well as training the team has been getting out and about with some community and sponsorship activities and tomorrow we are heading out to the Alliance freezing works to meet some of their staff, and then taking local kids for a skills and drills session later in the afternoon.

If you're in the south and have the opportunity to come to the game, we'd love to see you at Rugby Park on Saturday afternoon. Afternoon rugby is great and with the sun on the back it's always an enjoyable occasion on and off the field.

Cheers
Glenn

By the way, is Fetu'u Vainikolo any relation to 'England's' Lesley?

Mark,

Are you sure that is New Zealand?

Sounds more like Scotland to me....
