Well here it is then, started... Big Grin

A place for discussion of all things Rugby, whether club, national or international...

The next joy we have to look forward to is the Rugby World Cup. (I imagine it is at this point some of the NZ forum members will join in...)

Any comments, chaps? Or still a bit too early?

I'm confident we can keep it below 50 points.

Yep - 36.

To nil.

Oh well.
Posted on: 14 September 2007 by Chillkram
I thought it was very generous of England to spurn quite a few penalties towards the end in order to give SA the kudos of nilling them.
Posted on: 14 September 2007 by acad tsunami
3 minute silence for the death of English rugby? I think we should invade SA and put a bit of stick about. The nation mourns. A sad day.

What a load of complete crap!! Red Face

Tired and utterly predictable. For me it was summed up again and again by what happened when the ball went out of play. Whilst England sluggishly turned around towards the touchline SA had already played the ball and were away - very nimbly.

Ironic that the best England player doesn't actually play for any club now! (And certainly not if that was, sadly, a hamstring rather than cramp). Those who represent the premiership clubs so often championed on this thread were a total embarrassment.

I reckon Samoa will be fancying their chances...

Bring Jonno out of retirement!
Posted on: 14 September 2007 by JamieWednesday
There are just no excuses are there?

Nil. I mean NIL!

Jesus.

The only good thing that may come is everything gets scrapped and we start again with a new four year plan. New management/coaching/ blank sheet of paper for the team with the coaches actually going to games themselves and picking form players, build experience and learn (again) from the Southern hemisphere teams.

That was simply dreadful. The game was over after about 15 minutes.
I now hope that we lose to Samoa, so that we can go away & completely rethink/rebuild. We were outplayed in every department.
If we beat Samoa, I'll have to listen to misguided hope that we can 'triumph from adversity' & 'pull it out of the bag', etc only to get trounced again by the Aussies. No thanks.
Matt.

Come on Mark, at least at the last world cup you had a forward pack that would allow Jonny to boot the ball!

No, Martin Johnson...

But to be honest, I think we could have gone futher back and done better ... Brian Moore, Dean Richards (Dean-o!), or perhaps even Bill Beaumont (afterall, he'd be perfectly familiar with the antiquated tactics).

Wade Dooly.

The Underwoods!

Back when we got our players from the forces...

They don't like it up 'em I can tell you.

Exactly, PJT. As James points out Jonno is Martin Johnson. He would not have allowed that sort of capitulation.

Actually, from a possession point of view, England were superior with 63%. But they had abosolutely no idea behind the scrum and SA shut them out without much effort. The Boks' kicking game was just too much and English defending woeful in the face of proper pace and a cutting edge. Even Portugal did what they could not and scored a try against the All Blacks. Only Jason Robinson came out with any credit and now he's finished. All England's most exciting young backs are either injured or have been left out. Time to ditch the old guard and start again with a young fresh team and outlook as James says, be prepared to take some hammerings along the way but build for 2011.

Not looking good for Wasps against Saracens either at the moment.

Am I the only person who enjoyed the humiliation that the (English) team suffered? I was rather hoping that SA would post 50 points. For far too long (even including the team that won the WC) any Engalnd side has been grossly over-rated; pedestrian tactics and inept execution. Worst of all they have benefited (?) from a rabid fan base, which should be more at home supporting a (any) football side.

Of course I could just be writing this because no Gloucester player ever gets selected!

Didn't see it, and I doubt I'll be watching (m)any of England's games.

England's decline is because they're a one man team, and he's played all of ten games in the last four years.

No Jonny, no England.

Apologies, but I reckon we are on the same wave-length.

However, without a commander in the back line...

I can't agree with that Chief. England were not a one man team in 2003. Jonny was brilliant then of course, but it was the phenomenal pack that set him up to kick the points and there were other good players behind the scrum like Jason Robinson and Ben Cohen who was rated one of the best wingers in the world at the time. People forget or have selective memories/views because it's England. They also had an immense captain in Jonno and he was their best player, not Wilkinson. That was a great team.

Bloody good fight from Portugal.
Had the AB's doing some really stupid errors, and showed more fight than most other teams - yeah alright, especially England.

South Africa is playing very good, clinical rugby and are looking like the team to beat this year.
Sure I hope the AB's will meet them in the final but they need to tidy up their game before then. Not taking away the Portugal try, it just simply should not have happened.

Cheers
Pete

Great game from the ABs today, PJT. I'm really looking forward to seeing them play in the final. I hope they win it because I genuinely believe this is the best rugby team the world has yet seen. I hope they don't choke this year.
