TT buzz

Posted by: Wolf on 17 January 2003

Well actually the buzz must be coming from the needle. It happens only on a few lps and at a certain high, forced frequency. Not the highest frequencies either. Just was wondering what you TT type guys make of this? Needle is fairly new and one of the records is a very clean recording of piano music, other times in in the vocals. any ideas?

old Planar 3, Souther Linear Tone Arm and Accuphase stylus.

thanks

Hi wolf

sounds like something is vibrating in harmony with certain frequencies IMHO; may be something as simple as a loose screw. Is it definitely coming from the cartridge area? Try listening ( believe it or not ) with your mouth slightly open - this improves hearing - and may enable you to localise exactly what is making athe noise.

Mike, strange - but true....

the buzz or static comes thru the speakers so I was wondering about the needle not being able to pick up that frequency. Most of the time it's great sound, but just on a few, and some good, records it buzzes, little but it can really irritate.

thanks

Hi Wolf

sounds like severe mistracking. Check that all the settings on the arm are correct. I don't know this arm well but from what i read about it years ago it is very sindly and light and the exact oposite of rega/linn/sme/naim etc. Perhaps the cartridge screws are'nt tightened enough.

A knackered tweeter will do this (resonate when asked to play certain frequencies). It's most unpleasant.

Does it ever happen off CD?

cheers, Martin
