An unapologetic rant
Posted by: chaliapin on 28 February 2008
I know this is heading into "Why, oh why, oh why" territory, but why are the first letters of all the track names I download from Gracenote always capitalised? Who writes "Thy Judgement Now Is Near" rather than "Thy judgement now is near"?
Am I only the person who wonders what the point of Gracenote is when you have to keep rewriting the titles? And yes, I do submit my amended versions.
Perhaps I should worry about weightier things or get out more.

PS OMG, I can't believe my 1000th post was in response to a question on grammar.....but then I did attend Aberdeen Grammar School so myabe it was destiny!
Eh....it would be because they are supposed to be like that since they are song titles and not sentences....quote:but why are the first letters of all the track names I download from Gracenote always capitalised?

and if also, but,
If you're going to quote from the Book of Revelation
Don't keep calling it the Book of Revelations. There's no 'S' - It's the Book of Revelation
As revealed to St John the Divine.

The plot thickens. The sleeve notes for the CD have "Thy judgement now is near".
I also pulled two scores at random off the shelves. My copy of Songs of the British Islands (1903) follows the rules suggested by Exiled Highlander, but my Novello edition of Haydn's The Creation only capitalises the first word or proper nouns etc.
Talking of St John the Divine, who was it used to talk about the atmos. on Patmos?

The title of
The Creation ...
comically has the next line as
by FJ Haydn.
As Bruce Forsythe might have said, "Didn't he do well!"
One of my favourite pieces!

I contribute to a online music database and you have to write all the songs in the proper way with capitals at the start of all words and they don't let any mistakes go, buggers.

Oh dear, I had better keep my Robert Gordon's friends off here! The old rivalries will resurface!!!
I've always respected the case setting on the album cover!

And while we're at it, why do so many capitalise the S following an apostrophe? I frequently see things like All the King'S horses and all the King'S men.
Still thinking about matters Johannine, who was it sang "John the revelator"?

Is it just me, or is describing one's rant as "unapologetic" itself a form of apology?!
Uh oh... paradox!

It used to be nice when at one time instead of a preface you got an apologia at the start of a book!

I think The Pedants Society* may take issue with your spelling on that one.

Robert Gordon's I fart in your general direction. Same with Aberdeen Grammar (where's that then?).
Allan Glen's was the place to be. Crap at rugby (one had the choice of having one's face kicked in at rugby training or going home early - now which would you choose?) but had the highest pass rates in maths, physics and chemistry in Scotland when I was there. Selective in the best possible sense i.e. based purely on ability, with only nominal fees, it was a genuine comprehensive school full of lads from mixed social backgrounds, most of whom went on to university because being smart and achieving were the cool things to do. I believe that the current principals of two of Glasgow's three universities are old boys. Sadly closed in the mid seventies due to misguided socialist dogma.
Unfortunately also demonstrates why single sex schools are no use as I'm still shy and uncomfortable with women I don't know. Well you can't have it all ways.

Aberdeen Grammar School was also a same sex school back in those prehistoric days, but we did have the luxury of having Aberdeen High School for Girls, Albyn Girls School and St Margaret's all within a short walk.....oh memories......Jane S, where are you now!?
Oh and as for edukacion, Lord Byron did OK at Aberdeen Grammar and he certainly wasn't shy around the girls Tom!
Cheers
