Should I buy a Headline?

Posted by: Surfing Alien on 24 February 2003

Hi Folks!

I recently bought a Sennheiser HD-600 as a replacement for my HD-570. I'm using a pure class A headphone amp I build some 10 years ago, and it still sounds great!

But... could it be that a Headline fit the rest of my system (FC2/CD5/NAC112/NAP150) better, sonically spoken that is?

I've never had the opportunity to listen to it, so if anbody has one, please let me know.

Also, is it possible to power the Headline the same way as a Stageline, connecting it to the NAC112 in stead of using (read: buying) the PSU

Many thanx!

Hi,
I have just ordered a Headline and FC2 to go with my CDX/112/150. My FC2 will power the 112 and Headline. In your case, you will need half of the FC2 for the Headline, with the other half powering either the CD5 or 112. Therefore, you will either need another PSU, or make one of the CD5 or 112 stand alone.

I agree the manual does not make this clear but you do NOT always need a power supply to power a headline. Mine runs quite happily off the Aux2 left hand socket of my NAC 112.

The only issue is if you need the Aux2 as an input for a source. In that case you need to use the right hand socket and as you can't use both sockets a power supply would be needed for your headline.

I hope this is clear, it confused me for ages and I suspect the confusion is exploited to sell unnecessary power supplies.

Further thought

I think you will get more value out of your FC2 by using it to power your pre-amp and CDP and running the headline from the pre-amp as discussed. That's how I have my sistem set up.

Olly,
My CDX can only use an XPS as an external power supply, not the FC2 (unfortunately!). A new XPS is way out of budget at the moment (unfortunately again!!).

Hi guys!

Thanks for the info! My dealer told me it should be possible to run the headline using the NAC112 as power source, but he wasn't sure about it. Since he was on hollyday I thought I'd ask around here...

Olly, I think it's quite a bold statement you make about Naim exploiting confusion to sell more PSU's. Could it be a separated PSU just performs better than using the NAC112 output? For my own constructed amp I use a 160 VA PSU, but keep in mind it runs in full class A!

I must confess that the manuals Naim supply leave me scratching behind the ears every time I look into them :-)

For those of you who onw a Headline, how do you like it? Do you think it's worth a try? Did you do any comparison against other apms before you bought it?

Thanks again!

Steved,

Have you a delivery date for your headline?? I've been told 'a few weeks'....

Dobbin,
I ordered it from my dealer last Saturday; he said "a couple of weeks".
I had previously emailed Naim to ensure the FC2 would work with the 112 AND the Headline. Naim said "The new Headline will be released very shortly, probably next month. Price is £265.00" - their reply was dated 11 Feb.

Theoretically shouldn't it be possible to wire a *cap so that the unused preamp voltage supply in the power amp could be used to power a headline. Makes sense to me since one is unlikey to be using the power amp and headline at the same time. I'm picturing taking the supply from the SNAIC-4 at the *cap end and running it to a power plug on the *cap. Does this make sense? Of course this would only work on amps with a pre-amp power supply. I'm not suggesting a DIY here but wondered if Naim could design it into a *cap.

cheers

I ordered a new Headline back in November and was told at the time that I should have it by the end of January. It's now March and there's still no sign of it, has anyone yet received one?

Sorry everybody,

those of you who have been in contact with us by telephone or e-mail will already know of the production problems we have been experiencing with the new Headline. The good news is that our suppliers seem to have finally got back on top of the situation and we are projecting that delivery to dealers should begin during the latter half of this month.... Smile

To all of you who have been waiting we extend our sincerest thanks for your patience.

Richard,

I understand from my dealer that there are yet further delays and that we're unlikely to see anything other than a dealer dem model before April (the suggestion was 3-4 weeks from now).

Presumably the price rises will not apply.

Dave,

the new Headline is currently in production (hooray!) and, provided the first production batch pass all their tests, they should be with dealers in the first week of April.

We apologise for the delays which in most cases were beyond our direct control - I still haven't had a chance to hear one yet but I'm assured the wait has been worthwhile...

The price will not be rising in April above what has already been quoted for the new model.
