552

Posted by: Paul Stephenson on 09 June 2002

In some 20+ years at Naim I have had some pretty big milestone moments of sounds. Today with my 552 at home was another huge step. I started the day with cornflakes and the dreadzone-second light and have just come up to breathe!

Absolutely amazing sounds, just take any opportunity you can get to listen to this one!

Paul

I'd love to hear a 552.... so are you planning a UK Road Show to show it off...and if so it would be good to dem against a 52 in an active system and then with a 52 in a NAP500 passive... and....

If so don't forget having a session at the Sound Org at York!

I would welcome the opportunity to attend a 'road show' anywhere in Scotland - further north the better.

However I don't know of any major hifi event which has ever taken place north of Edinburgh.

A 552 and Dreadzone deserve a full fry-up and a bottle of bubbly, not a bowl of cornflakes!

Over the years I've noticed most Naim employees build the gear they use themselves.

Did you build your 552? Have you built any of your equipment?

Just curious.

Congratulations, Paul. Let me see...I can see the marketing now:

'Forget the price! With looks like these, this had better sound good!'

Paul, it just needs slight visual design adjustment - maybe you should straighten out the front panel and - I konw! - put an uncolored chrome-like (but not shiny) edge around the front panel. Then the beauty of its looks will match the undoubted beauty of its sound.

Regards.

How does the taxation compare for a perq supplied 552 compared to a car <g>

Paul,
Are you listening to any vinyl and is it true that a 552-powered Prefix outperforms a Supercap-powered Prefix?

Ron, no I didn't build the 552 but when I started I worked on the factory floor for 3 months and also built my own, 32, snaps and 250. Later on I built the rest of the kit to go active.
It was great experience, press the on button and the kit I made played music, didn't blow up!.

Vinyl, Currently my Lp12 is in the factory for a re-fit, so just cd.

Its R&D, I have to force myself!!

Road shows, I am sure there will be some events, they are so unpredictable, good/bad rooms, set up times etc. A home demo is the best route.

Paul,
As a favour I am prepared to take that old 52 off your hands at no charge and dispose of it on your behalf, as I'm sure it's just lying around getting in the way now smile

Cheers

Paul/Chris, sorry to hear that orders are way down on expectations... wink

I had heard that all the trucks in the greater Salisbury area had been reserved and been painted with the Naim Logo and legend saying "Bringing the great 552 to the world" ready to deliver the 552 when it is released - rather like the WordPerfect for Windows roll out in 92.

Only you could be cynical about two music loving enthusiasts wishing to share their joy with the world!

Paul,

I've just come back from Steiner Box (a perilously short 90-second walk from home) where Andreas has set up a 552/500/SL2/Fraim system, fronted by a 'humble' CDX/XPS.

It took the Master of Ceremonies a while to eliminate a couple of faults in the set-up, but when it all snapped into place it was smiles all round.

The system isn't even properly run in, but it's already sounding very, very natural and highly highly musical. Yes, what a horrible job, but someone's got to do it ... wink

You'd have thought that the team at Naim would be able to supply Paul with a better picture to post that the thumbnail size artists impression that we got. Surely there must be some decent photo's available for forthcoming press info etc.

Sounds like I'm grumbling ? Oh well, its been one of those days and I don't have a dog to kick (Not that I would condone such actions.) I'll be OK tomorrow.

Paul,

Since the 552 is not going to be an option for many of our homes in the near future, not unless I can find a life of crime that really does pay (interestingly there was an article about forging banknotes on the radio today, using just home PC kit), when are you going to invite us round for the 'home demo'?

PS how about a photo of the insides of that 552? Someone's gonna do it, might as well be you.
Posted on: 10 June 2002 by Paul Stephenson
Pics in and out will be available soonish as will dealer demo models, Roy and the guys have been putting the final touches to the masterpiece.

My place for a listen Andrew, well if you are in the area give me a bell! (cannot promise but would try)

T/table refit, lack of use the last years due to cds1 and 2 has mean't its in need of a total service!

Paul in terms of a quantified improvement 552 versus the 52, what are we talking here, is it a moderate leap 102 to 82, or something more substantial 92 to 52 type jump...

naheed...

nait to 52, rega/mm to lp12 aro mc blah blah etc etc those type of differences.

...that you'll know in seconds, cold out of the box: way bigger than the difference between a NAP250 and a NAP 500 + PS.

A huge step forward but at a price.

Well, at a mere 40.000 Euro on a 552/500 combo, what can one say?

Where do I get the funds to buy some source boxes that match such a system... Mmm, could sell the Porsche. Errr, not a good idea. I'll stick to the easier priced and musical 5-series.

If this is what "upgraditis" is leading to, I guess my wife will have me put away in a mental hospital or something...
