Marantz DVD 7000 - difficult to start

Posted by: Derek Wright on 29 December 2005

I have an infrequently used Marantz DVD 7000 player that is very temperemental -
from cold it will give read errors and fail to play some DVDs, other DVDs it will read and play OK. After a while of playing readable DVDs, the machine will then read and play the DVDs that it could not play when it what freshly powered up.

AS the machine has probably played less than 100 DVDs I am reluctant to replace it without seeing if it can be made more reliable.

Is this a common problem with DVD players or this model

Thanks for any comments.

Is the dv-7000 fairly old? If so, could it be that the laser mechanism guide rail needs some lubrication (this might also explain why it seems to improve when it's 'warmed up' a bit)? I have a Marantz DV4100 which is about 3 years old and when, recently, it started skipping on some discs which had previously played fine (and which weren't showing any damage), the guy that serviced it only "lubed the mech and blew off the lens" (his lovely choice of phrase, not mine...).

Good luck with it - if it's only had minimal use I would hope it should be an easy fix.

Starbuck - *$

The 7000 is about 5 or 6 years old

The box started to work after I had moved it from the rack and opened up the box and watched it work - (hands behind back so as to not touch the innards) - so it could also be an alignment problem and the movement shook it back into line.

Your thoughts tie in with mine - do you know what lubrication is used - it has to be very light to avoid attracting dirt and so clogging up.

Did you send it back to a Marantz service agent or did you get a "local man" to do it.?

Local chap (actually one of my friend's, handily) did the work and used, from memory, GT85 Teflon lubricant applied with a cotton bud. Seems to have done the trick.
