Retailer questions

Posted by: Audio Visionary on 11 October 2010

Well.., we retailers are supposed to have all the answers for our clients. But in this new age of servers and computer audio, we need guidance from Salisbury to show us the best way to highlight Naim's sonic superiority and the least expensive way, yet impressive way to show potential customers the Naim system.
We have an HDX and the DAC in shop but we do not have a touch screen which clients can use to see the working system in place. How can I use an affordable screen like the iPad within a Naim server based digital replay system to show how great and easy it can be for our customers to control their music?
Maybe this will help us sell turntables.. Winker

Kind Regards,
Bryan

THE IPAD works just fine right now!! X2 is fine the graphic quality is below par at that res but it works fine, get one! Aside from this why not come on here retailer or not and ask a question there are so many possibilities for control and devices, seems possible many here could have useful input.

Thank you for the confirmation Paul. I have this week bought an iPad which will run the nServe app for my soon to be arriving HDX-SSD. I look forward to the update.Bit of an expensive remote control, but it's such a lovely little thing and at least I can check my Email while I'm at it.

You might want to look at Songbook HD in the appstore. It is an ipad app that works with HDX. I thought it was expensive and buggy when I tried it - but they have released several new versions lately so it may be better now (my HDX is still in for HDX-SSD conversion so I havent been able to try).

Another use for the ipad is as internet radio, spotify-client etc. This will work over wireless LAN when next version of iPad-system is released in a month or two. You will need an AirportExpress or AppleTV2 connected to the DAC.

A company called RedEye has an external wireless unit so you can use the ipad as a universal IR remote.

So there are more uses for the ipad :-)

What I miss in both Songbook and nServe is link out on the net. Ready-made search-links for Google/Bing with the current artist/album/song. Or search Twitter. Especially given how easy it is to embed the browser in your own app.

That's very interesting. Thank you.

Just as an interesting observation, I was in the Gramophone today and Bryan has quite a few Naim products on display and nicely set up as a system such as the UnitiQute right at the front of the shop with comfy chairs so people can just drop in sit down and enjoy. However I think dealers would benefit from a bit of advice from Naim central as to how to present the Naim components in the best possible light. For example dealers getting some details on what hard disk array works best with the ripping engines, the fact that an Ipod touch display for the Naim app looks better at present that an Ipad. Perhaps this is done already on the dealer forum?

Anyhoo I think Bryan has some great demo areas and there are certainly a lot of discerning people in the city of Edmonton and beyond who would certainly appreciate the musical and build quality of the Naim products. In fact I have recommended many people to the Gramophone who have heard my modest system and are even amazed at my old Nait 2 that I still use.

So if dealers could use the same ancillary stuff as Naim use then if there are problems it may create a useful feedback loop for Naim central and keep the variations to a minimum so product support could be better targeted.

Cheers

Tim
