tonight - LATER ...... BBC2 @ 11.35
Posted by: DenisA on 14 November 2003
Enjoyed Elbow last week (the CD is starting to get its hooks into me) and Ludacris (excellent bassline to test your house foundations).
Looking forward to Arthur Lee
Bad News for Greeny & Matthew Robinson, I think Jools is going to perform with his BIG BAND
Later With Jools Holland
Fri 14 Nov, 11:35 pm - 12:35 am 60mins
Travis make a welcome return to the Later fold tonight, performing tracks from their long awaited new album 12 Memories. Also joining Jools are Love With Arthur Lee and The Distillers.

"Later" used to be really interesting and esoteric - now it's just commercial tripe.

Nigel & P,
I had no intention of starting the 30 sec. abuse sketch, just info for music fans
I agree that this series has not been consistantly high, but i would have thought this was partly down to artiste availability. I do not think anyone has attempted to format a show that mixes musical styles in the way that Jules has over the years. I think he has passion & sincerity in what he does and I'm sure he recognises the failures when they occur. With the styles of music and artists (young & old) available, I would like to see his show broadcast once a week. That way an alternative musical medium is available to both artists and public alike, which surely benefits everyone. Just because someone has the courage to take a chance and fail (sometimes), they should be applauded not dismised IMOH.

Anyone see this.
Arthur Lee was great, I was amazed how faithful to the originals the strings and brass sounded. Just good to hear those tracks in some slightly different take to the album versions.
I might have to get the Love DVD that has been mentioned.

Arthur Lee far exceeded my expectations and it must be one the best ever Later....performances.
What was the last song as this was the best of the Three IMHO?
What made Arthur stand out was the school band sound of The Distillers
This is why the Later format works, as you can see crap alongside FANTASTIC (In my musical opinion)
Just checked that the Forever Changes Concert is available as DVD & Double CD.

Arthur Lee was fantastic apart from the incoherent interview. The small 3 person jazz combo were great also. As for the Distillers they were bobbins!

Hi
Set the video for Arthur and the boys and it didn't tape!
A bit ironic as I was at the Love gig on Friday at the "Islington Academy". Great gig, but Arthur's high note sare starting to fade a little, not suprising with all the gigs he's been playing. Caught both of the RFH shows earlier this year a truly emotional evening, standing ovations etc etc. The DVD is very good.
Frid was sans strings, but that allows Baby Lemonade (Love) to really turn it up, Mike Randall on guitar outstanding. Arthur played a CD of a new track at the end of the gig. I think it was called "Rainbow in a Storm" they'd recorded it a day or so earlier in London, sadly all the new songs that I've heard him play have been very disappointing, almost childlike in construction. I can't see us ever getting much from Arthur in the future as far as new work is concerned. we do have " and the other Love albums Forever Changes" though...maybe it's enough?
Love play at the Forum in London on March 1st 2004 supported by "The Seeds", one song one riff, but a great one!

It was "You Set The Scene" - the closer for Forever Chamges.
As for the DVD, it's brill - spine tingling stuff. http://forums.naim-audio.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=67019385&f=38019385&m=7801985876&r=4591958086#4591958086 If anything, Arthur's voice was slightly stronger at the concert.

Nick,
I stopped off at HMV last night on the way home and bought the DVD & the Double CD.
In reading your comments - wot you said andmoreagain
Only played the CD so far, which must be worth 5 Gushes on anyones Gushometer. By the end of 'You set the scence' (itself worth 6 Gushes really) I had to pinch myself. The overall feeling being part of an 'experience' is rarely achieved by ANY musician.
Naim Equipment has its PRAT Acronym to convey it's Aural Signature, well Arthur has reminded me of a cockney expression I use when suitably impressed. It is F*!k my old Boots, so the Forever Changes CD is the first of the few to attain my FMOB rating of 5
The CD Packaging is also second to none. Can't wait to see the DVD now. This should then complete my Aural & Visual stimulation

I missed Love on Later, but then, I was at the gig (and post-gig clubnight) instead, so I saw him live and got acknowledged by him twice - probably due to my big gob and over-exciteability - oh, and probably 'cos he recognised said gob from September 2002's Bristol gig
And I was also at the RFH gig the DVD's from - very hot and stuffy in there, but blinding.
His Glastonbury set was mindblowing too, both musically, and, err, well...
Is the DVD good editing-wise? The dual CD set is ace....?
The string section on the RFH/Glasters gigs were great as well - way cool to have real strings on a live gig.

Greeny,
Do you think the Brass & Strings have a George Martin 'feel' about them?
I think they have the spirit of Georges arrangements on Sgt Pepper's.
George also does stirling arrangements on Badfinger's 'Straight Up' Album (recommended to any Beatles Fan).
I think I will have to start a Badfinger Thread now

I find the arrangements on Forever Changes essentially Spanish American and the arrangements on Pepper's extremely English in sound. I don't think they have the same feel at all. Incidentally I love both albums.
