I heard it live about ten past eight..
Yes she certainly lost it, but I have no idea what caused her giggles! James Noughty carried straight on as if nothing had happened.

Green's hysterical outburst started after a studio member remarked that the 1860 recording of a woman singing the French song Clair de Lune sounded like a "bee buzzing in a bottle".

...and that's exactly what it does sound like too George! (edited to make a bit more sense)

Dear Tony,
I heard that old 1860 recording, and was riveted for few seconds! Amazing to think that is possibly the oldest recorded sound yet broadast!
But a pure or pleasant sound is was not! It seems some back ground studio remark set poor Charlotte off!
She occasionally used to appear on R 4 humour programmes and she is a hoot when off duty!
I do realise that I incorrectly spelt James Naughtie's name earlier, especially as I then looked at the link, but I could not replay it ...

I think it was actually someone whispering it in her ear, rather than general studio banter. Good job no-one's whispered to her about not getting her leg over...

Dear James,
What helps to keep the "serious" BBC so delightful, even with its tremendous professionalism [at its best] is that somehow they have seemed to employ real, and often really nice people.
Here is some more Johners [Brian Johnstone] with Ag'ers [and many others], in a six minute tribute to the man broadcast after his death on Grandstand: Johners.
I think Charlotte Green, in her inimitable way, falls into exactly this class of splendid characters, and long may a sense of fun, amonst the riun of modern life, continue!

Charlotte Green reading the Shipping Forecast is one of my eight 'Desert Island Discs'.

I also listened to her live and it brought a smile to my lips. Slightly O/T but the thought of watching and listening to Stephanie Flanders dissolve in a fit of giggles whilst carrying out an interview on NewsNight would I'm sure make my Desert Island Discs.

I'd just take Stephanie Flanders to the island as my luxury item.

You'd be lucky from T5
