In praise of...Supertramp

Deeply unfashionable I know, but Breakfast in America is a really fantastic album. The first side of my vinyl copy contains one of the best sequences of songs I have heard from anyone. Picked up 2nd hand for £3! I don't think any of their other albums match up, but who cares?

£3 for Breakfast in America - sounds like the Crime of the Century

This was the album that was always playing in demonstrations in the early eighties. I remember listening to it in the demonstration room of Subjective Audio when auditioning my LP12 in 1982! This was through Meridian M10s and, in hindsight, was very bright but was impressive sounding at the time.
You're right it is a nice album with quirky lyrics and great rhythms.
I have 'Even in the Quietest Moments' at home and you're right again it is a bit of a disappointment comparatively.

I have music I like to listen to in the car that I would rarely listen to at home and Supertramp is one band I would play especially at the start of a journey.....'Alright here we go again.....' great singalong stuff...'oooh yeah'

As a modern beat combo I think they take some beating.

Take a listen to the album "Some Things Never Change" which Paul Darwin introduced me to at a Naim Demo evening a few years back. Track One "It's a Hard World" is a very dynamic track. Get a US copy if possible.

Yes, "Some Things Never Change" is a good album, very dynamic sound, due to it being a HDCD.
Some good tracks on there.
MFSL done a good job with crime of the century & breakfast in america too.
I think they could definately fall into the guilty pleasure category.

I bought that cd after Paul did the same trick at a Manchester gig.

Last October I swa John Helliwell's current jazz group 'Creme Anglaise' in Stockport. There weren't many there but John said he was quite pleased compared to one of the gigs he did towards the end of Supertramp, in Paris, when virtually no one was in attendance.

Can't agree with the op I'm afraid. Crime of the Century, Crisis, What Crisis? and Even in the Quietest Moments are three great albums, but Breakfast in America is overly commercial and uninspiring. Unfortunately that seems to be the only one the radio stations play tracks from.
I've only posted this to get my karma up to 'Member'... how sad.

'Crime of the Century' is the gem for me, and the production is something else.
The sound quality and innovative use of effects from pre-digital times are quite superb.
John.

I second that! Regards, Larry

Not my bag but I seem to remember the live album (Paris?)sounding pretty good at a demo.

The live double album Paris was one of the first albums I ever bought and I liked it. Should dig it up I suppose and see if it's in good enough condition to play.

Guys I am with you - saw the tramp's at the last ever earls court gig with Roger Hoddeson - what a band live or recorded!
There has been some recent re issues of remastered CD's - PARIS sounds more alive and better than the Album I have - Soapbox Opera is really something would advise any one to get the new ones (HMV web) - Have most on vinyl and now CD - will have to compare -
