Spooky coincidence...

I had made a New Year resolution with regard to my music buying/listening habits which I thought made me a bit weird until I read this blog (ignore the first bit of waffle)

quote:
I’m thinking that I may purchase fewer albums in 2010, and I’m thinking that I’ll spend more time with those fewer albums. I’m thinking that it may be more fulfilling to become deeply acquainted with five or ten albums than to simply collect 110 albums.

Is it just me and him or..?

Was he reading my mind?

Easy to say, harder to do. You'd better keep off amazon, the forum and stop reading the arts reviews. And also stop visiting your local dealer Big Grin

Keep listening to the three albums you have bought so far this year....

I have a voracious appetite for new music and from time to time I wonder if that is both a blessing and a curse? Am I moving onto the next new find too quickly?

I will always fall back to my all time favorite albums but sometimes I look back at albums I loved last month, year, etc and I'm afraid that I moved over instead of on?

It's a difficult balance but I have found spotify incredibly useful at getting a "fix" on a album that I might have bought in the past, played once and consigned to the shelf. Now I no longer need to buy it.

I agree that Spotify is utterly fantastic in this regard. I also find listening before I buy via Spotify invaluable in these 'modern times'. I think the Spotify database is superb. From time to time I request an artist/album and they don't have it and I can't get frustrated because what they do have is vast.

I would love to use Spotify as a more prominant source in my listening habits but I find the streaming dodgy ( this may well be my dodgy home router and not Spotify's fault).

It's a noble ambition, and I have made more of an effort to get to know what I have recently. But curiosity always gets the better of me in the end. A blessing and a curse, as has already been said.

Here in the land of sauces and butter, diets can be scary :-)

I made a decision a couple of years ago to cut down on buying new music and concentrate on particular artists, genres or labels that have come to my attention. There can be many reasons but the main one is of a respect from others about the quality of their output respectively. So I joined Rough Trades album club to keep an ear on what was happening on the new music front and started to look into artists, labels and genres that I already had an interest in and to keep an ear out for respected artist, labels and genres that others were enthusiastic about. So in my mental list I have things like exploring Prog Rock (and all its derivatives) from the early until recent bands, Italian House and Disco, Classical and modern Jazz. Labels like ECM, ACT, Warp, Soma, Domino and also celebrated artists like Robert Wyatt, Nick Cave, Bob Dylan, Monolake, Vladislav Delay and the list grows longer. Now I stay away from the interwebz for buying because I have access to loads of record shops and the thrill of not knowing what I'll walk out of a shop with is great and hopefully I will not have a lot of hyped up filler in my collection that can result from buying on impulse.

Well I hope that makes sense it works for me and if your new years resolution works for you Gordon then you'll be happier for it I foresee.

I have that problem big time at the mo. Winker
Stu
Me too - perhaps I could just listen to Basia Bulat over and over for the rest of the year - but wait a minute: Martha and the Muffins new album is coming out (I thin it has gone quiet) and ..... well there is bound to be lots of new and interesting records.

I once had a plan not to buy any music that was not released between 1966 and 1974, but then I realised I'd miss so much great new and interesting music from artists as diverse as Christy Moore and Scott Walker ... so I gave up on that idea.

I have made a new year's resolution not to buy any rap or x-factor records.

Yes

But at least the post office is in the village - when it is the green card from City Link I have to go 20 miles to collect.

I have nothing, but praise for my local Postman - I was out when he first called, but thoughtfully he called again at the end of his round.

As for Ms Bulat's wonderful record - the vinyl does sound better than the CD on my system, but both sound great. Very impressed that you get a free download with the vinyl so if you buy the vinyl and want an iPod friendly version then Basia has ensured you can get it for free - wish all artists would do this.

Amazon are using city link more and more now. Especially if you have amazon prime (which is a superb service) and order later in the day. I prefer the Royal Mail as they just post through the door. City Link always need a signature and if you are not in it is a card through the door rather than the disc - a real pain. I was having a great sleep this morning when it was disturbed at an ungodly 7.30am on a Saturday by the city link guy. He told me amazon are going to be moving almost all their trafiic to them going forward...

I really don't mind that too much, what I do mind are the bloody Parcel Force or DHL Import Duty and VAT forms with the obscene 'Clearance Fee' added to it. Frown
