Sad news this morning, critic Alan Blyth has died:

A wonderful and insightful critic, particularly of the works of Wagner, Britten and Verdi (and much more besides). His contributions of late have been one of the very few things still worth reading the Gramophone for and will be sorely missed.

Agree Tam.

AB's article's in the Gramophone were always worth reading. Sad news.

In my view he was the last representative of the real musical critics, both in concert reviewing and considering recordings.

Form his writng and that of others such as Micheal Kennedy and Peter Stadlen you could read the review and actually imagine what the concert had been like. No new generation, so gifted, has come along in the music criticism.

He will be missed.

Sincerely from Fredrik

Sorry, didn't see this when I posted my later item.

A sad loss. And, from what I've read, a decent man. (Lavenham, good wine et al!)
