102 to 202 - Help!

Posted by: Bahnburner on 12 February 2003

Smile Greeting All! My first post here! Lol, it only took me three years to do it as I have been lurking here for a long time; but I could really use some opinions/suggestions.

My current setup is:

CDX/102/Hi/Napsc/180/credos.

I have seen a number of comments on the new NAPSC making a huge difference. This makes me think there might be a benefit from swapping a 202 for my 102. I am saving for an XPS so I have a limited budget right now. Anyone dem a 202/102 recently, I've scoured the forum archives and haven't found much?

What do you think?

Greetings long-term lurky!

I'd say welcome but you know what you're in for Wink

My advice? Well I had exactly that same system as your good self. Actually still kinda do, sans an 82 and an XPS. So I think I can at least venture an "opinion" on what you should do.

As beggers can't be choosers I did the XPS before an 82. If I'd actually had the choice to choose (given the choice) I would probably have plumbed for an 82 before the XPS. An XPS on the end of your system will sound fantastic, but I feel it's kinda under-utilised a little. An 82 is a huge step over the 102 and the CDX is definitely not disgraced with a bonus if you use other sources. So there's my two cents - 82 first then XPS.

I can't give you any definitive advice on the 202 I'm afraid. My "suspicion" is that the 202 isn't as good as an 82. With a 2nd hand 82 costing circa new 202 money that's where mine would be going.

Best of luck dem(o)ing.

OK fellas - bring it on Cool

Thank you for the warm welcome, I feel like a spy coming in from the cold. I think I have been lurking here for probably four years, I can recall the 'word of god' posts by Julian and of course the avalanche of posts by Vuk. Those were the days...

Gosh the naim bug really gets a hold of you and just won't let go...still. I did compare an 82 and 102 a couple years back and I recall quite an improvement.

The 82 had a cleaner, more open sound with more musicality. I would have to agree with your assessment of the 82, and that the 82 would be better than a 202 in many respects. Although I enjoy my 102, I wonder if a few marginal naim dollars between the 202 and 102 would make any noticeable improvement...my wife is not very impressed with me talking about upgrading my kit again, so I must walk a very fine line.

cheers.

Buy the s/h 82 then take your wife out for a music buying spree, focus on her interests and then you both win. I'm sure she'll give you a kiss for it.

an 82 or 282 is in my future, a fortune cookie told me that, yipee!!!
