Home Secretary Smoked Dope As Student Shocker

Big deal. Who the hell didn't FFS? It was twenty years ago, it doesn't herald the end of Western civilisation, does it?

Better that this is out in the open, and not something I shall loose any sleep over. Fredrik

Who the hell didn't?
Me. I've never smoked anything.
Still, I'm no going to lose sleep over this.

Quite right - the new law says you're not allowed to smoke in an enclosed public place.

Same here.
Personally, I'd like to see the home secretary sacked - whoever he is and what ever he did - I don't like politicians - the higher up, the worse they get.

Ditto.
btw - I've never smoked anything nor taken any other form of illegal drug.

It's a she actually, to be exact Home Secretary Jacqui Smith.
That's just the kind of apathy I'd expect from a heavy drug user

They did more or less legalise it after all...
Having lived in Jamaica for a significant period and having seen what Ganja does to people long term, the crime was for the government to quasi-legalise spliffs in UK, not the Home Secretary admitting to some one off misdemeanour in her youth.
[Technically they didn't legalise it, but morally that's the message they sent out to the average punter.]

I was going to post something witty about my membership of the Apathetic Party, but then I thought why bother, besides my membership has lapsed.
My only addiction is Ipswich Town - great result at Chelmsford the other night - coming back from 2-0 down.

I had a single puff as a student in 1972 and found it did absolutely nothing for me apart from confirm that smoking was a pretty manky thing to do. I felt quite smug in the morning when the "cool dudes" who'd been smoking all night were lying in the kitchen puking into bin bags while all I'd to cope with was a hangover. It was a hell of a hangover mind you.

Alcohol is much better for the body. Anybody could see that...

Please don't get me wrong: I am not approving of illegal acts, but in all things, moderation is the point.
I think the admission of having smoked dope on the part of various Cabinet Ministers is refreshing, and much better than simply pretending to be holier than the next person. Saints are Holy, but not many people match up to the requirements.
I prefer honesty to hypocrasy every time. I guess Mr Brown will be having an internal little fit over it, but then I would think he really almost certainly has avoided dope himself! I also approve of his dumping of such nonsenses as the Super Casinos, and he is something of a breath of fresh air, as well as a certain austerity of view. I hope he does well, even if I would not find myself voting for an MP of his party. I think Cameron will have a much tougher assigment now, with him in charge, though I doubt Brown's judgement on the Pension situation, but show me a politician who has not made a big mistake or several, and I will point you to another Saint!

Screaming Lord Sutch: Britain's longest-serving party leader

1992 Huntingdon result - how did so many people vote for the wrong candidates
John Major (Conservative) 48,662
Hugh Seckleman (Labour) 12,432
Andrew Duff (Liberal Democrat) 9,386
Paul Wiggan (Proper Liberal) 1,045
Deborah Birkhea (Green) 846
Lord David Sutch (Official Monster Raving Loony Party) 728
Michael Flanagan (Thatcherite) 231
Lord Buckethead (Gremloids) 107
Chris Cockell (Forward To Mars Party) 91
David Shepherd (Natural Law Party) 26
My lasting memory of elections, which I quite like because they are a bit like the Eurovision Song Contest without the same level of importance, is of Major making his winning speech with Lord David Sutch to his left and Lord Bukethead to his left - it was broadcast around the world to show our victorious PM of the day and his would-be opposition.

Having just spent a few days in Amsterdam, where smoking and indeed consuming pot and hash by any means is legal in the appropriate cafes, I'd say that Dutch society is hardly in freefall. The smell wafting around such establishments took me back to my long-gone younger days.I didn't partake, nor was I tempted! The only people we saw clearly the worse for wear were the usual motley selection of Brit chavs and a few humpty-dumpty shaped Teutons.
