Help!

I have an odd problem which has got me scratching my head. I recently became the proud owner of a (second-hand new style) NAC62 and NAP 160 combi. It sounds wonderful, especially with my Nak Dragon, but LP reproduction is a big problem.
(I own a Valhalla-Cirkus LP12 with Ittok LVIII and K9).

When I bought the amps recently they came with 232 MC boards, which I exchanged for some moving magnet boards. Unfortunately, I sometimes get extreme distortion in one channel, which of course does nothing to enhance my listening experience. Now I know it's not my speakers or the pre-power combo (CD, tape and tuner all work fine), and it doesn't seem to be my turntable/cartridge (which worked fine through my old NAIT 2). I tried swapping the boards over and, lo and behold, the distortion appeared in the other channel.

The weird thing is that there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to how and when said distrortion appears - length of playing session or volume seems to not be a factor. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

The chap who gave me the boards used them in his own NAC62 for ages with no problems, so has anyone any idea what's going on? I can't see any damage to the pins or the boards.

Any advice would be most appreciated...

Kevin,
I had the exact same problem with my new S/H 62. After a while the right channel would get very distorted. My dealer switched out the phono boards but that did not fix the problem. After speaking with NANA, my dealer sent back my pre for a new selector switch (no charge to me!), and that seems to have fixed the problem. Supposedly they have seen this before. Fortunately for me NANA mistakenly recapped my pre, so I should be good for 10+ years now. I cant be sure that you have the same problem, but try switching sources during the vinyl play back and seem if the distortion (temporarily) goes away.
cheers
Dan
