NAP500 IN ARENA JULY EDITION

Posted by: Simon Matthews on 06 June 2001

A one page editorial on the Nap500 in July edition of Arena. Blimy even the text hits the spot:

"RHYTHM KING
Can you hear us at the back? The best amp in the World is British!

Beauty is in the eye, or in this case, the ear of the beholder. While the naim 500 amplifer may resemble the black box from a russian fighter plane, anyone who's heard it will agree it is - as so many others have decredd - 'the best amplifier in the world'. And it should be. At a cool 10,255 pounds the 500 will drain your bank balance as effectively as it will the national grid. While lesser amps may make for great 'hi-fi', the naim 500 makes great music, majoring on the kind of things - rhythm, pace, dynamics - that others pass over in their quest for subterranean bass and tinselly treble. Just ask the people in the next street!

Hockman, contrary to your past re-iterations over your apparent dislike for the look of the 500, your smilie at the end of most of your posts seems to indicate otherwise. The 500 look has incidentally grown steadily on me these past few months - and if I had to go through the trouble to rob the bank now to afford one, I certainly would be displaying it publicly in the listening room with everything else, not behind the racks... big grin

Good listening; the music's still groovin'.

Sadly, they don't have time to listen to Naim while flying.

However, there is a rumour that a prototype cruise missile was made that used the innards of a NAIT as part of its control system. unfortunately, all the missiles that were test-fired veered off course and began circling the transmitter of a highly regarded FM radio station. Eye witnesses claim they could see the missiles gently tilting from side to side in time to the music, and flying with a happy and contented demeanour.

Of which Arena magazine do you speak? (Not the Australian mag, is it?)

naim are not time lords. Introducing a 500 plus p/s into two 135 boxes would have required an ability to increase internal volume at the expence of the external space envelope, much in the same way the tardis was constructed.

Hockman

Am glad you're enjoying the music; that's the most important thing.

The 500 is handsome : display it..!

On an another note, I just separated my 2 runs of Naca 5s yesterday, taking care in the process NOT to run them in any form of loop, having gotten this tip from Peter Chappell : and this alone tightened up the bass of my SBLs quite considerably. Shocking. Thought this would be helpful if you haven't already done it for your set-up; it's worth the effort, although it might mean a slightly more untidy look to the room.

Have fun. cool

Incidentally I'm making the move on the bank tonight; care to join in? You could get another 2 500s for active configuration, absolutely on the house...

Good listening; the music's still groovin'.

I think the new kit looks fantastic. Espcially with the CD3 central lid giving full on symetry.

One thing that has always disturbed me about my kit is the naim logo being all over the plce, in the centre on Pre/CDP on the side on the amp, on the side on the hicap, but then where do you put the hicap, in the middle making that one just inbetween side and middle.

The 500 is f**king gorgeous and no messing.
